Important Egg Laying Question

mblons May 17, 2011 09:09 PM

i have a hognose that I noticed had eggs about 7 or so last night. She laid about 11eggs(all bad I believe) laid last egg about 10 last night and it looks like there are two or three left and still looks that way at 7 tonight. I just gave her some water as she is still in nest box. Should I be concerned about egg binding yet and is there anything I can/should do? Thank you

Personally, I would soak her in warm water for about an hour to see if that helps pass the eggs. If she still hasn't passed them in a day or so, you could do one of two things: 1) gently try and massage the eggs out (this may take some time to loosen her up) 2) if all else fails you can use a syringe and hypodermic needle to go through the skin and egg to suck out the yolks from each egg. Massaging may help here too.

If all of her eggs look bad so far, there is a good chance that the 3 still inside her are bad as well, and its best to get them out and have her around for next season.

Keep us updated on her progress.

ctually, I would leave her alone and let her pass them herself... If she was abble to pass 11 so far, chances are she will pass the remaining eggs no problem... I would not do anything at this point to disrupt her laying... Its her first season so she may just be a bit on the tired side...

Moving her around and taking her out for a soak at this point would be a very bad idea... Being that she is still in the nest box is a very good sign...

Thanks I put her mouth in water and she gulped it up then laid the remaining eggs. Don't think the eggs are good. They are pretty white but mushy and I can pick them up like you would a cat by back of neck.

Glad to hear she passed the remaining eggs.

White eggs can be non fertile also. The easiest way to tell if they are fertile is to candle them. Use a small flash light and you will see red veins, If you see nothing at all and the inside of the egg is yellow it's a good bet it's not fertile. If you see any red at all incubate it and the veins should spread within a few days.

I usually just incubate anything that has a nice looking white outside. If it's bad it'll mold at some point.

Thanks. They are being incubated and I am going to candle them. Appreciate it. Mark
