They always keep me on my toes

IkeLightner May 19, 2011 08:37 AM

So one of my most exciting BRBs in my collection has to be Sultan. He is a 2008 from Mr. Colling and one of my most promising colored specimens. He is also dear to my heart because I picked him out right before I left for Europe for a semester abroad back in 2009 and Dave cared for him the entire 4.5 months I was gone!!! Boy was I excited once I got home and saw lil Sultan!!! (oh and btw I named him after one of my friends from Saudi Arabia that I met while living in London).

Beyond that, I mainly just love Sultan because he has some of the most beautiful and intense red coloration I have seen on ANY BRB period!!!

In the past 1.5 months I have begun to get a little worried about Sultan though. He has always been a STRONG feeder and then one day he just decided to refuse his normal f/t rat or chicks. I tried feeding him probably 4 or 5 times in the past 2 months with no success. I also noticed that he was spending a much greater amount of time soaking in his water. Then, it all hit me when I noticed a couple tell-tale signs...... sperm plugs!!!! & not just one lol I found 3 or 4 floating in his water yesterday morning! I guess my problem is not that he has something wrong with him or that his cage is too cold/hot, nope, he has just finally reached sexual maturity and realized that females are more important than food right now lol!!!!

Anyawy, this is a big relief to me and figured I'd share it with the rest of the forum!!! P.S. look for new pics from me in the weeks to come. I have 2 VERY exciting new acquisitions that should be here soon and if everything goes smoothly I have a litter due on 6/25/11!!!!!

Now a few pics of Sultan (these show color spot on)

That sounds about right on timing, Sultan is one of my 2008 Molly x Hook babies. One of his holdback littermates was also producing sperm plugs this year and not too interested in food.

Glad he turned out so nice for you!!

Hey Dave, thanks for chiming in with more info on this beautiful bloodline!!! It amazes me to see the difference between Sultan at first shed, sultan at 6 months, and sultan now!!!! A great example of how much their colors can progress over time!!

Also, thanks for showing us Carl!!! He looks to be a smoker himself!!! I think you made a wise decision on this pairing!!!

You're welcome Ike, It is pretty cool to watch these little gems color up over time. Every year I look at the new crop and one one hand kinda forget how much they lack color at birth and on the other hand see lots of opportunity for smokers.

The MO-HO pairing was one of those pairings that just worked. Unfortunately with Hook unexpectedly passing away at such a young age I was never able to do that pairing again. I'm just glad I held one back for myself. It was supposed to be a girl "Carrie" but with the sperm plugs this season I had to do a name change to "Carl".

Oh, sorry to hear that Dave, I guess I never realized that Hook had passed away. Did you breed him to multiple females in 08 and did you get to breed him any other year besides then?? What happened to him anyway???

He was bred to two females in 2008 but only Molly took. 21 babies.

Late 2008 he just passed away, no warning, no sign anything was wrong. I think he must have had a weakness somewhere like a weak heart or something.

Yeah, really sucked and at the same time I received a lot of outpouring of sympathy including an offer for me to keep one of his already sold babies which I declined. I already had one on hold for me.
