gravid 2006 high colored female

IkeLightner May 19, 2011 08:16 PM

Here are a couple pics I snapped tonight of my 2006 female Lucille. She was produced from Mr. Hummel's JD x JR pairing and has been gradually raised up to size over the years, this being her first breeding season. POS of 3/1/2011 I have pegged her due date at 6/25/11 plus or minus a week.

Since March 1st, she has been hugging her heat pad and constantly reads anywhere from 81-84 degrees. She also has refused food since this time. I am super stoked about this pairing as it involves my two nicest colored normal BRBS period!!! I just hope something healthy shows up at the end of June.

Sorry for my blurry pics, but you get the idea, I think!! I know something is in there, lets just hope they're healthy little snappers!!!

oh yeah, in my gravid BRB excitement I almost forgot to mention my newest addition, and only non-brb reptile in our household. My siblings and I just purchased our mother a pet she has ALWAYS wanted. A hatchling leopard tortoise!!!!! We got it for her from a local reptile breeder friend of mine who knows the actual breeder who produces these down in Texas!!!

This is Homer.

Ike,

That's an awesome tortoise. Please keep posting pics as it grows, I'd love to monitor its progress. I'd love to get a tortoise one day, just need to get motivated to build an outdoor pen.

Also, congrats on all the BRB activity!

Thanks for sharing,
Ed

Hey Ed,

Thanks for the response, and I'm glad you like the new tortoise!! I am super pumped about him because of the large amount of white that is already coming in on his shell, and for the future to come!! I also have been reading a TON about these torts and I have found some really interested stuff. (Sorry to go OT more to everyone) Apparently these desert torts spend the first few years of their lives in high humid burrows etc and up until 2007 captive keepers never figured this out. Now that keepers have started to figure this out, they are seeing the healthiest, smoothest shelled, leopard tor babies in 20 years!!! Before now, captive bred leopard tortoises with non-pyramided shells were a rarity, but now it is starting to become more and more possible!!! Much like BRBs these guys love high humidity and I mist his shell 2-4 times per day and he also has a humid hide box just like most BRB keepers use!

Anyway, sorry to ramble everyone...... Ed, I'll do my best to follow your lead and keep up with my OT posts!!!

I agree with Dave. Blurry pics are better than none. Congrats on a successful breeding. I'm sure we're all looking forward to some baby pictures

Hey, thanks Dave!! And I think you've had to use that line on me many a times!! I am the king of blurry pics hahaha! Oh well, I'd rather be good at caring for my snakes than documenting their beauty lol!!!

Ike,
...She looks great.....and lumpy too. You can never be 100% certain one is gravid but that one looks like about 99% likely. Next time you have her out of cage to clean let her crawl through your fingers and count the lumps.
Good luck!
Jeff

IkeLightner May 25, 2011 09:53 AM

Jeff, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this girl!! It makes me feel much better to have the rainbow boa guru agree with my thoughts!!!

I would totally feel for the lumps, but I'm way too paranoid to handle my gravid females!!!! I'm sure it probably wouldn't be any issue if I supported them etc. but I still don't want to chance it!!!

Jeff and Ike!

Yes you can feel the lumps. I've never even attempted to count them though, I treat all my gravid girls with kid gloves. Like they are delicate crystal figurines (that bite).

I do feel them as I move them to clean etc. there is that clear squishy/lumpy feel to the belly of a gravid girl.
