Young Pyro on Hunger Strike

pyromaniac May 24, 2011 06:30 PM

This is a last October picture of '10 Yazmin. This spring she was eating okay until April 22, when she ate her last meal. Then she went into blue, and came out of blue over two weeks ago, but has not wanted to eat anything since; not lizard scented live pinks, an actual lizard (captive bred parasite free), a brained pink, her snout smeared with both pink and lizard blood...nada! I have 7 other '10 pyros who are all eating just fine, plus 6 older ones who are also eating fine.

I suppose eventually she will eat, but this is rather frustrating. She seems in good health and has all the exact same conditions as the other little ones.

Hey Bob, don't get discourage I have a hatchling from last year that seems to only eat once in a while. I try every couple of days with various different ways and I have basically said screw it. I will offer every couple of days when I feed everything else and if she doesn't eat she doesn't eat. That's why I have a cal king in my collection, that never refuses to eat all the scraps....LOL.... Anyway she doesn't lose any weight and is very active and alert just doesn't like anything offered all the time. She did eat for about 4 weeks straight when I took her out of cooling. Maybe when I bump up the heat mid summer she'll do better and start eating like an animal. My temp range right now is only about 73-86 and I will warm it up to about 75 - 90 mid summer after adults have finished breeding and laying.

Thanks, Jimmy, for reassuring me I am not alone with my problem child. If it ever gets warm here in the foothills maybe she will start eating again. At least there are plenty of others to eat her refused items:

Zafina the "bull snake"....LOL!

That is a beautiful knob; is she your sporadic feeder?

A member posted in the mountain king snakes forum about his '07 pyro who is a sporadic feeder, but none the less bred and produced a nice little clutch this spring. So I guess i don't need to be such a Jewish mother about the eating thing.

No she isn't, and I am thankful for that. The one pictured is my best feeder, took F/T day old pinks the day he shed. Thanks for the kind words, I just can't get myself to let any of them go quite yet. Atleast the knobs anyway.

Today the problem child ate a newborn pinkie.
she is still in her feeding jar as I hope she will eat the other newborn pink, too. Either she was finally ready to eat or I just had to offer her the smallest possible size food. Some of my snakes will only eat small stuff even though they are physically capable of eating bigger items.

Should I get a successful hatch I will be hanging onto the babies, too, unless I can be sure they will get a good home with someone who knows how to care for them.
