Classic Everglades rats

53kw May 26, 2011 01:21 PM

Well..I did bring up that I have one or two other things around the collection; now I better pony up.

Here's a shot of my classic Everglades rats from Daniel Parker at Sunshine Serpents. Terrific person, wonderful website and outstanding animals and service. No down side to Daniel anywhere.

These adults are about four years old and the female is preggers for the first time. The male is the one in front, giving the camera the stink-eye, since he's still mate-guarding. The female is coiled on top of the nest box, taking in some full-spectrum light. The female has ghostings of her juvenal pattern, which is how I tell them apart. I'm interested to see how the babies come out, and one friend is already salivating for a choice hatchling.

The female has not yet had her pre-lay shed so it will be a while before we have any eggs, and I don't hurry the eggs along, just incubate around 78 degrees, so look for babies around late August-ish.

Ish. Herpetological term.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing the pics. Have only had yellow Rats. How are the dispositions of Everglades Rats? The Yellow rats I had were not corn snake tame but if handled respectfully were fine.

DMong May 26, 2011 10:18 PM

They can be pretty variable Bob, just like Yellows and almost anything else for that matter. Like you said, when initial taken out and handled gently without a bunch of "spooking" movements, most can be pretty decent. All my American rats have usually always been that way except for just a small percentage of them that remained extremely willing to strike at anything.

Overall though, I would have to vote the Texas rats as more "apt" to not mind drawing blood, just as monklet's, and my texas photo depicts..LOL!, but that is certainly not to say there aren't easy-going ones too, or nasty Blacks, Yellows, Grays, Glades out there.

These "moonshine morph" locale-specific "greenish" rat intergrades are absolute sweet-hearts!!. They are WAAAAY bigger now than in these old pics. They are definitely going to be of breeding size next year without a single doubt!

Yes. I had leucistic Black Rats from a friend for years and years that were mellow campers. Very alert but mellow. I've also had Black rats that were both extremes.
Appreciate the info Doug.

Very nice!

Yeah, Daniel Parker always has a good assortment of W/C animals, and offspring originating from his many locale-specific animals as well.

good luck with the nice clutch!

Very nice specimens! Daniel is great to deal with. I purchased a Glades county yellow rat from him this year.

I'm glad your Everglades rats are doing well for you. Keep me posted on their progress. They should produce some nice offspring for you.

In response to what Doug said, I should point out that these are a long term breeding project for us. We are not just catching them in the wild and selling them. We have have caught many rat snakes in the "rossalleni" range and the nice ones are few and far between. We have saved the some of the nicest ones for our colony, which already incorporates nice CB stock from various bloodlines.

Here are a couple of our cb 'Glades rats:
