I posted several months ago about this very nice suboc from parents collected in Hueco Canyon, Texas. The breeder used to live there, although I met him in Tucson at the Tucson Herp Show, which has become one of the nation's best reptile shows. When I first met the breeder, he was selling some of the nicest subocs I'd seen, and for a great price. I got a pair but eventually let them go to a friend who kept mooning over them.

I missed those fine subocs and tracked down the breeder, who was still at it years later. He had some Hueco Canyon animals he thought I'd like. I got a pair of hatchlings and they are the cleanest, nicest subocs I've seen. Their color is an indescribable fawn/gold that seems to glow.

These subocs are strong feeders and now both take small rats. They're old enough to breed this year and are currently together. Suboc breeding season is June. Any babies are already spoken for, since I'm keeping some and several friends have lined up for any surplus. Subocs don't have large clutches and it already looks like there will not be enough to go around.

The original breeder sold the parents of mine, but kept a few babies--he just wanted a few years away from breeding so he's raising the next generation and plans to breed again when his snakes are old enough. I hope he keeps going--he is very dedicated and has some of the best animals around.

I really like subocs but searched a long time before I found the first pair, which impressed me so much. Then when I got these I was even more impressed. I had spent some time gabbing with the breeder and we emailed back and forth a few times, so when he said he had something I might like, I trusted him and was not disappointed.

One of my snakey friends was visiting and when I lifted the lid on the tub with my female Hueco, he just melted. Took a while to get that out of the carpet, too--I had to call in a Carpet Python.

....Right--anyway, he's been after me to breed them for a few years and hopefully this is his lucky year. I'd like another pair myself since there is no way to replace these until the original breeder's holdbacks are old enough to breed.

I also have a pair of locality Panther Canyon animals, which did breed last year. Not all the babies turn that famous Panther Canyon orange, but I kept a few which did. They turned orange during hibernation. We'll see how orange they are when they mature.

Do the babies take to pinks right away or tend to need to be scented like kings?
I've had friends that were into Subocs and babysat some adults for them fir a while but never worked with them or asked. When I see some native American art is hard NOT to see influence from Trans Pecos rats in the colors and shapes.

I've had good luck with my baby subocs. They have all taken pink mice as a first meal although some wait a long time before eating. Subocs are very large hatchlings and the babies have a lot of yolk weight so they can afford to wait, sometimes until after hibernation. I've also found that many young snakes seem to feed better when they are kept in small groups, as if competition stimulates feeding. The baby Panther Canyons I kept are all eating live or defrosted pink mice with no fuss.
