Group housing and brumation continued

zach_whitman May 28, 2011 03:23 AM

Here are the three kings I was talking about. Several people who have seen these guys are convinced he is going to get eaten. I'd bet money he wont. The only annoying part is feeding all of them food that is small enough for him to eat. That female on the left puts down about 8-10 fuzzies/week!

Before everyone goes gaga with the questions... scroll down past all of the tricks for getting a corn snake to hump a kingsnake, to the very bottom of the page, and read the thread about group housing and spontaneous brumation, which talks in depth about these three snakes.

That's a pretty trio! He is considerably smaller than the other two.

Why not feed them in separate containers? I have a pair of pyros of which the female will eat almost anything anytime whereas her mate is more of a small item eater. If I fed them together the big female would hog the whole meal. Plus I like to see who ate exactly what. I had a smaller female in with this pair but I am housing her separately now as she seemed intimidated by the two larger ones, and would not hang out with them.

By the way, thanks for posting this topic again!

Part of the experiment for me was to see how much they would eat given free choice. Another part was to watch the group dynamic during feeding time. I was especially interested in watching this during growth as opposed to the relationship between sexual pairs which I have seen before. I just toss a handful of fuzzies in every couple of days. Separating them to feed would be labor intensive and defeat the purpose. This way is not exactly cost effective(she eats a lot of fuzzies, and they frequently leave a bunch uneaten), but it is easy and interesting!

That is interesting! But could the little male be getting intimidated by the big females and not getting his share? Do you weigh him after the feedings to see if he got any food?

Good luck!I had a female Sulfur King sold to me by someone who keeps their snakes like this and she was very under weight and stressed. I placed her in her own tub, and gave her individual attention, and she regained her weight and is doing great now, thank GOD!

He does eat. He just didn't eat for 3 months over winter and they got a big jump on him. He has great body condition and he is growing (I weigh them every month or so. I palpate him after feedings sometimes to make sure he has eaten. I have been thinking about separating him one or two nights per week to get some extra food into him, but I really think that he will catch up even if it takes a while. Checked on him this morning after a feeding and they were all cuddled up together just like they did all the time when they were younger.
