NYC, Boa's, Pitbulls...

ChrisErica May 28, 2011 08:16 AM

Every so often I see someone gets killed or mauled by a pitbull in the NYC area. But yet the authorities have outlawed boa constrictors and pythons. If you're caught with a boa you will get a $1000 fine. I've even seen them print the persons name and address in the papers. It just sounds so hypocritical too me.

We are always so quick to judge the animals in these situations. The irresponsible owners of these animals, dogs or reptiles, are to blame. Any boa (only 1 that I know of EVER) or python related fatality are accidental, but due to an irresponsible owner. Snakes aren't trained to attack as many dogs are.

I can go on and on, but the biggest difference is everyone loves dogs and the people with say are ignorant and uneducated about boas and pythons.

Who's had a problem getting home owners insurance because of their snakes? I did! I tried to be honest, but couldn't get anywhere.

Who's had the same problem with dogs? Good luck if you have one of four or five breeds.

rickmoss95 May 28, 2011 06:27 PM

Just so you know, ANY dog is going to do what it is trained to do! pitbull or not! i have been keeping pits for almost twenty years and they are NOT naturally dog or people aggressive!!! they are TRAINED be! they are THE most affectionate and tollorant dogs on the planet...hands down! i have had kids pull and yank on every pit i have owned, and NONE have EVER even lifted a lip at any kid. and every pit i have ever owned LOVES to play with other dogs...their strive to please their owners is stronger than ANY other dog also, so they will do WHATEVER is asked of them. it is just too bad these stupid a** little gansta wannabe bastards use them to somehow enhance their image and little di** complex. i think nine out of ten people who own pits, should not own pits...they have them for some sick personal gain instead of the wonderful breed they really are! and anytime a dog with a big head attacks, its automatically a "pitbull"...even if it has no pit blood in it at all. the media sucks, plain and simple, they make crap up or twist the facts just to get a story! with dogs and snakes, based off of bs and stupid lies...no scientific evidence whats so ever! i heard on one of these show on animal planet that burms could easily survive temps in the forties and go as far north as washington d.c.!!!! c'mon, if people would look at actual facts, instead of some di**weeds opinion, our dogs and snakes would not be under such fire....and stupid pet owners are only making this easier for them!

KeViN_CSV_06 May 28, 2011 02:33 PM

I don't agree with this at all, I understand that you are trying to make a point but I think you should try using something else to compare it to. I own two pitbulls myself and they are a great breed of dog. I have never had any problems with them and they are friendly with both people and other animals. It all depends on the owners and how they raise their dogs. It isn't the dogs fault. Other breeds of dogs bite and attack as well but its always the pitbulls in the news that are being reported. This also doesn't help because people just talk about the negative situations that they hear when they don't have personal experiences with the breed themselves

ChrisErica May 28, 2011 03:22 PM

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking pitbulls (I love all dogs), and I agree it's more the owner then the dog. I'm just down on the hypocrisy of the laws in NYC against boas and pythons. I'd love to be able to take a walk with a boa around my neck the same way someone can walk a dog, just without getting a summons.

rickmoss95 May 28, 2011 06:36 PM

walking dogs is also publically accepted...MOST people are fearful of snakes, so walking down the street with a snake around your neck would only add feul to the fire and help their cause! i love taking my snakes outside also, but i dont walk down the street with my boas around my neck..it freaks people out and pissed others off. this, in my opinion, is stupid...but most people dont understand snakes like we do! i have all the neighbors in my area pretty much educated and they dont seem to mind when i take my animals out to do photos, and the neighborhood kids beg me to take them outside so they can hold them...but reality is, most people dont want you walking through the public with a snake draped around your neck...i wish it was acceptable, but it is not.

If a person puts a powerful constricting snake around their neck, they're just begging for something bad to happen. Even letting a snakes face near a persons face is, IMO, REALLY stupid (or it exposes the persons lack of knowledge of the animals, or their inability to think about consequences in the future - either of which is VERY DANGEROUS).

The risk of a snake biting a person's face may be relatively low (or with certain snakes - almost an expectation) and the chance of them nailing an eye, even lower. But... what if... The question one should ask themselves before letting a snake near their face is: "am I willing to be blind because I wanted to be cool?"

Animals of ANY kind should be taken on as a true responsibility with inherent risks to the owner. To remain ignorant of these risks or to disregard them once known is a recipe for disaster - either for the owner, the animal, or perhaps both.

Education and understanding is SO VITALLY IMPORTANT.

JB,

What happened? Why did you have my comments deleted? You couldn't handle the truth or someone of my insignificant stature put you in your place.

Jonathan_Brady May 31, 2011 07:10 AM

I didn't request anything. In fact, I responded to your post in a very polite and civil manner. I also pointed out the holes in your argument by providing examples of exactly why a person with less experience should not emulate a person with more experience when it comes to taking major risks.

I don't mind getting put in my place if that's what I need. But I don't believe you have. I believe you're simply seeking negative attention on a public forum by name calling and baiting someone.

I don't intend to respond to any more of your posts (or private emails like the one you sent me this morning trying to get a rise out of me by insulting me and my animals) as I enjoy KS and am not looking to get banned and that's exactly the road your posts are going down.

I know you're Mr. Class & Innocent. Next time respond with a less pompous and arrogant tone by not calling people stupid and ignorant with a lack of knowledge and you won't get such a heated response.

Jonathan, you know how many people in this forum put snakes around their necks? Isn't that one of the reasons people own boas as pets? You try coming across as an authority, but end up sounding like a real fool.

mike_panic May 30, 2011 11:14 AM

I have to agree with you. My own 7 pound chihuahua put me in the hospital for 6 days and out of work for forty days. Forty some odd stiches in my finger and hand to relieve and infection. I damn near lost my left index finger and was in danger of losing my hand all together. Its just the bias of pitbulls that makes the grade. No one wants to say that the kid in Brownsville who was killed lived in total squalor. Dog feces in every room and I'm sure roaches everywhere. I've been in a thousand apartments like this. These people shouldn't be allowed to have children, never mind dogs. Trust me. As far as snakes in NYC go, what can I say, NYC is the most disgusting liberal city of them all. Its run by a billionaire elitist who wants to remove salt, non diet soda, and all smoking in public. If you ask me, the entire country is heading in this direction and we're letting it happen.
