Pyro going off feeding during spring

grnpyro May 29, 2011 11:30 AM

Just a question... How long is it expected for a male to go off feeding during the spring breeding season??

My male pyro went off feeding for about 2 weeks and then ate a meal and is now turning up meals again! Is this normal???

Also, he did not get to breed this year yet, will it speed things up if I let him breed?? (make him eat faster?)

Last question, Does a female ovulate after multiple sheds or just the first one during spring??

I would like to know also. My male alterna has bred both of my females. He has not eaten for 6 weeks, so I am thinking about moving him to a different room in the house. I think he is still smelling the pheromones of those two females.

That is my main question also...how long is ok for them to not eat?

my male alterna is still pacing cage more than usual. He hasnt eaten only 3 weeks. This happened with my male fla king as well a couple years back...they always go back on feed eventually, if not losing weight, i wouldnt worry much. Certainly changing rooms would prob help if female scent is the problem. Dave.

My 08 male pyro came out of brumation along with his two mates in early February. He ate a few times in February then in March got all involved with mating and did not eat all of March. He resumed eating in early April. He ate a lot during April (except near the end when he shed) to early May, and now is in blue again. It appears once the females stop releasing pheromones the male begins to feed again. I am looking forward to this shed as he looked dingy and off color after the late April shed, not his usual handsome self. I wonder if mating somehow made him look dull and dingy.

As for how often the females can ovulate after so many sheds, one of mine produced 7 perfect eggs but the other one just shed, then stuffed herself on hoppers (not pre-lay shed behavior! LOL!) so I think I am just getting the one clutch this year.

Late March lock but nothing seems to have come of it. Oh, well, there is always next year. I think I may have screwed up the timing on this as she had a post brumation shed but he was not with her at the time because I was being a worry wort and keeping him separated so as to get him to eat. Next year I am not going to worry about him eating. He will eat when he is ready. I will leave him with his ladies throughout the spring season.

nota pyro, but my annulata is finally eating again since brumation...so lets see, last October/November to end of May..thats about 6/7 months! He is healthy, active, didn't lose much weight, so all good.

Thanks for the replies.... It seems that I may just be worrying too much.
He ate a couple times out of brumation, then went 2-3 weeks no feeding, ate one time, then been off feeding for 2 weeks now.
He is constantly searching his tubs for a female it seems. I cleaned all the cages, then took a toilet paper roll with lint sheets in it sprayed with febreeze and set it in front of his cage and he seems to have slowed down. Still moving a lot but not in search it seems.
Sounds weird but I thought I would try to detour him from the scents of females.

BTW Zach, I have a nice long nose that I will be sending you a picture of. I'm going to try to feed it this week.
