Got a baby beardie today; new to this forum & to beardies...

shortydsm Sep 29, 2003 06:14 PM

So I was in Petco today getting crickets & worms when I went to look at the reptiles only to find a small tank with about 30-40 baby beardies in it of many colors & sizes. I have been wanting a beardie for so long & I had extra tanks so I figured why not. I picked one out that was a yellow-tinted color that stood out. It was a very hard choice, they were all so cute & sweet!

I got a whole bunch of extra acessories & the stupid Petco employee didn't see me holding the "companion box" w/the beardie in it so she didn't ring me up. I hate buying (or shall I say rescuing) lizards from Petco so I don't feel bad for getting a "free" one. I'm thinking I will go back soon to hopefully get another one for "free." That is one of the things I am wondering about... I would like another one but what if it turns out that the 2 are males? How old are they usually before I can sex them? Also should I get the Repti-glo/Repti-sun 5.0 or the 8.0? Is under-the-tank heating recommended? Where can I find more care/info sheets on beardies?

Congrats! I just got mine yesterday, but mine was $40 instead of free.LOL As for lighting I just got done reading an wrticle about reptile lights and of the 8 kinds(long tube kinds) tested Zoomed's Reptisun 5.0 did far better than the rest. Like 4-5 times better. I just ordered a T-rex active uv heat bulb and I heard they are supposed to give off a much stronger amount of uvb. I believe it is like 10 times stronger or something. I think a normal 5.0 gives off 5mw, and the Active UV gives of 50mw but also reaches farther. Sorry if this info is incorrect, but i think thats how I was told. I've read testimonials from big breeders that say they are unbelievable. I should have it soon. Good luck with the beardie! They are definately one of my favs if not my favorite!

follow the link below for some good care info for your dragon. best of luck with him/her, if yuo are to get another i reccomend having a second set up, a male and female or male and male will not be able to be housed together and even two females may not get along, just something to think about. as for heating and lighting, youll need an overhead heatsource such as a basking bulb or you can go with mercury vapor bulbs which act as both heat and a source of UVB, even with the MVB i reccomend getting a couple flourecent tubes to brighten everything up, the brighter the better. if you go with a reuglar basking bulb you can use the uvb tubes like the reptisun 5.0 or repti glo 8.0 . good luck and if you have any specific questions needing answering come back and just ask

...I have a question about--how big is your beardie? Babies less that 10-12 inches, measured from tip of snout to tip of tail, aren't recommended to be on a sand substrate. It can quickly & easily cause an impaction. Other than that concern, I think your setup looks super!

Congrats on becoming a new dragon slave! If you have any questions, or just want to brag & show off pics, this is the place!
