My First Clutch!

bcisco May 31, 2011 10:39 PM

She laid 7 eggs and they all look great! 5 stuck together in a mass and 2 were singles. Momma was around 2700g mid-April and weighed 1860g after laying her clutch today. My Pastel is the proud father.

They are resting nicely in my incubator (Pro MR-148), but I’m a little worried that I will not be able to get any more clutches in there! I have one more big normal girl that’s gravid and a smaller Pastel girl that’s a possibility. I knew they were bigger than chicken eggs, but I didn't realize how much bigger until I unraveled mamma from the eggs.

Has anyone else been able to creatively get three clutches to hatch in this style incubator? I'll probably break out the hovabator I have in the garage and set it up as a backup, but I was hoping to keep them all in this incubator since it is easier to regulate temps.

I have the same incubator (well, the Exoterra version so its a different color). With the containers Im using I can fit 3 eggs per container and 10 containers in the incubator (4 on the top shelf, 2 in the middle, 4 on the bottom).

I havent filled it up this much, I was just curious about the maximum the incubator could take. I would be slightly concerned because there is a 3 degree temp difference between the top and the bottom.

3 degrees in something that size seems to be a bunch. If the temp is the 93 showing on the top of the incubator get it turned down so that the warmest one do not exceed 89 or 90. Your eggs that stay 3 degrees cooler will hatch just fine at a temp of 86 or 87. Might take them a couple more days to pip but you need to run them on the lower side of 90. I understand that high temps cause more problems with eggs and babies than a couple of degrees cooler. Good luck with your babies this year and you might want to think about moving up to a small or medium fridge. Jay

Dont worry, the temperature isnt 93. The display has been running 5 degrees high since I got it. The middle shelf is 88, the top shelf is 89.5 and the bottom is 86.5.

As for a fridge incubator, I might eventually switch but Im not planning on it this year. While this has a few quirks, there are enough benefits that I actually like this incubator.
