Research on Florida Burm range

mfoux Jun 03, 2011 02:48 PM

Hey guys,
Can anyone point me to the latest research on the Florida burmese python range?
Specifically I'm looking for confirmation (or contradiction) of the following:

-So far Burmese pythons have only been found in three counties in Florida.
(and can anyone tell me which counties)

-When were the first feral Burms found in Florida?

-In the recent python hunting season, no pythons were found/killed.

-I've heard wildly varying stats on the number of tracked pythons that died during last year's cold snap in Florida. Does anyone have accurate information available?

-Has ANYONE been attacked by a feral python (aside from wildlife officials or other citizens attempting to catch the snake)?

-Feral cats pose a greater threat to the endangered wood rat than feral pythons. True? False? Does anyone even know?

Is there any SCIENTIFIC estimate of the number of feral pythons in Florida? I've read estimates ranging from 1,000 to 100,000. That sounds like "We don't have a clue" to me.

I'm always trying to educate people and it's very important to me that my information be based on verifiable fact rather than rumors or invented statistics.

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

-Mike

I think this is covers a lot of what you are asking

It has references to a lot of your questions.

I think this is the most recent article in the controversy http://www.cnah.org/pdf_files/1747.pdf
