newspaper as substrate

livinginvestment Jun 04, 2011 12:57 PM

Hi,

What are the issues, if any, when using newspaper as substrate? Is the ink harmful to small animals? I am bring told it is but no details as to why. I've been using newspaper as much as possible lately. I know many of you do as well.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kenny

Up until about 20 years ago, the majority of newspapers used a petroleum based ink. However, since then, virtually all have switched to a soy based ink which is completely non-toxic. Even back when the inks were petroleum based, I seriously doubt if there was enough of an exposure to petro-chemicals to cause any issues.

Here is a good read: http://www.riobravoreptiles.com/care_raisingboas.htm

And there's a paragraph about substrate.

thanks to both of you....the website seemed more concerned about the texture (or lack thereof). I'm comfy using it and will continue until the females become gravid.

Colored ink may still be toxic, but I use soy-based ink newspaper exclusively for boas/pythons.

I agree. Color inks may still be toxic but b&w should not be a problem. Ik now many people who use it all the time. THe only problem is that it can darken your snakes. I have even thought of using shredded paper since it is probably less dusty then many beddings and cheaper.
