NEED SOME HELP

JPCONS Jun 06, 2011 05:43 PM

I have a 7 year old female who has given birth before.

She is on day 111 pos. Last night I found 2 slugs in her cage and she was pushing. About 35 minutes later she pushed out 2 more slugs. I watched her for a while longer and she kept pushing. This morning I went down to check on her and she was in her protective state. I found 1 more slug this morning. She is very alert and protective of her few slugs.
Now is it posible that she only had 5 slugs in her or could she be bound up? What would be the next step see if she pushes any more out, should I get x-rays and will they show slugs?

If she is bound up what would the signs be? Any and all input or others who experienced this a reply would be greatly appriciated.

As far as being bound up to be on the safe side I would suggest soaking her in some warm water for a bit...I know it seems to help them relax and remove waste from their body so it should do the same if she has anything left in her?

I dont have much advise to offer as I havent dealt with it myself but it might help!

Good luck with her!

She may have eaten other slugs that you did not see. I think the real test is if she eats for you. 99% of the time, if they eat after giving birth like it was their first meal, you are out of the woods.

Slugs are hard to pass and I do not know of a good solution to passing them. Many female will have old slugs in the next litter. I have had a significant number in a later breeding. I mean like 10 or 12 old dry slugs.

Thanks Guys for the advice. I will soak her today while I clean her cage and try to feed her tomorow. Have my fingers crossed.

I went through something very similar last year and ended up losing my female because she was slugbound, had babies still in that died went sepctic and killed her. By the time I decided soaks weren't working and took her to the vet it was too late, vet had me give her an enema but she died the next day. Looking at her, I had no idea she was that backed up (there were 2 or 3 slugs still in her and about 7 or 8 babies, she did give birth to one baby and 7 slugs, I thought she was empty but I was wrong). She also ATE for me, no hesitation, after she passed the slugs and baby which was why I thought she had passed everything.

So my point is, if there is ANY doubt, get her to the vet ASAP. I wish I had, but it was alredy too late by the time I finally did.

She got blocked up by a too-large slug. here are the xrays. red arrow points to the slug that blocked and yellow arrows point the pockets of gas buildup from the decomposing babies.

good luck and I hope she's okay.
