laying without pre-lay shed?

brianm616 Jun 07, 2011 12:14 AM

so today while doing one of my many daily checks i find seven perfect eggs in one of my female sinaloans moist hide.

i'm elated, for sure, but she didn't have a pre-lay shed so i wasn't expecting her to drop yet.

has anyone ever experienced this before?

also, she's the only colubrid in my collection that shed during brumation.

I can't say that I've ever experienced that one. Hopefully the eggs are all good. usually females drop slugs early before the good ones are laid but that is also usually after the pre-egg laying shed. Keep us posted on how they turn out.

Shedding during brumation is very normal.

Good luck.

thanks for the reply dave.

yeah, i wasn't sure about the shedding two months into brumation. this is the first year that i've gone big scale with breeding (well, big for me) and i hadn't had shedding during brumation before.

as for her eggs, they're picture perfect. got them set up quick and put them with the other 70 plus eggs i've got going. now i just have to wait for three more sinaloans to drop and then comes round two for my nelsoni (they dropped their first clutches in late april/early may).

i've had females lay slugs a day or so before dropping good eggs before and actually this year had a female lay a slug followed by another seven two days later. unfortunate, but a nice snack for my eastern king.

here's the female in question:

It happened to me a few days ago with an 11 year old campbell.
Five eggs, 3 good, so far.

I had it happen last year with a cali king. In fact,I wasn't even aware she was gravid. She retained sperm from the first go round and wasn't even put with the male after she laid the first clutch. She also didn't have a post shed. The whole clutch was lost as I wasn't set up with a laying box and she laid in a water dish.
