my male king snake 's hemipenis flared

m77mcreedy Jun 07, 2011 03:15 AM

Out today when I cleaned his when cage and stayed like that for 4 hours before going back in. I heard hemipenises can dry out when left out like that. I couldn't take pictures but I wanted to because my mom took the camera to my brothers baseball game in town. She said I could use it when she got home but it was to late. Why do hemipenises do that. And if they lose one because it drys up and shrivels and faLls off will they be ok I know they have extras. And all of my eggs I posted the other week dried out and are now dead. I put them on a hot rock with a light for heat but it was dfefinetly to heated and such. I willtry it again next year. Wish me some luck ill need it

You have to put eggs in a tupperware container with lid.......add perlite and a little water to the perlite........put on shelf in closet or somewhere safe at 75-82 degrees and eggs will hatch in about 60 days. Open tupperware lid two-three times a week and fan in new air.....You can't use a hot rock and light. You will cook them......Research reptile egg incubation on internet for more info. You'll do better next year....snakes have two hemipenis

Wow even if I had two, I wouldn't want one drying up and falling off!

Pyro eggs in incubator with controlled heat and humidity. Styrofoam lid off to show interior for photo.

One of many good articles about snake egg incubation. Read all five pages.

Never use hot rocks with reptiles. The animals can get burned by the heat, as they often cannot detect that it is too hot. This could injure a male's hemipenises if he laid on the hot rock (assuming you have a hot rock in his cage)

Does anyone interested in hybrids have, or know where I can get, detailed information on cross breeding kings with corns?

Oh, yeah, the s. florida mole king x eastern indigo project...LOL!
I am kind of wondering how somebody with all these snakes would think hatching eggs on a hot rock with a lamp would work. I do try to give everybody the benefit of the doubt; one can't know everything...
