Hatched!

pyromaniac Jun 08, 2011 10:13 AM

A big hatch commencing June 6!
Okay, not snake eggs, but am I ever happy to see these little guys. Gryllus Assimilis, a new cricket species to take the place of the Acheta Domestica which was decimated by a virus. I got a batch of adults from my friend John and started propagating them as fast as they would cooperate, as I was plenty tired of searching for ant nests and termites for my young fence lizards. The Assimilis is immune to the virus, and is much bigger than the Domestica, and does not drown in the water bowl like the feeble Domestica; they just climb right out. My Domestica had declined over the winter due to needing new blood, and this old type of cricket is hard to find anymore. Just as well, the new ones are much better. My lizards agree!

How much bigger are these crickets as adults?

We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion people if you had to be beautiful to get laid.

Some of my breeders.
Adults get up to 1 and 1/2 inch long, about a half inch bigger than the domestica, and much stouter. Culture is same as for domestica. Assimilis pinheads are a lot bigger than domestica pinheads.

Are these those really dark, much larger crickets? At my shop, we get them from a distributor from Mississippi.

Where mine came from.
Yes, they are bigger at every life stage, and in my opinion far superior to the old domestica.
