how hard is transporting eggs?

varanid Jun 08, 2011 11:27 AM

My wife has applied for a job in Abilene. If we get it (I'll know in 2-3 weeks I guess?) I'll need to move some clutches of eggs...it's about a 5 hour drive from here to there.

I was guess just leave them in thier little boxes and stick them in a styrofoam cooler with a small heat pack, and some packing (pieces of foam?) to keep them stable so they don't get tossed around? Should that work?

Yeah, the cooler put on some fluffed up clothing, or pillow, surrounded with other shock absorbing clothing/towels, etc...should work fine. I would mark any loose eggs on top, and make sure the eggs are "cradled" a bit in a divit in the medium just for extra percaution so they don't turn any if something should happen.

I don't think I would bother with a heat pack though in just a 5 hour trip, but that will also work if you want. Just keep it from contacting any of the containers.

I had to transport some eggs , they were at 2 weeks and being incubated in vermiculite, i completely filled the egg tubs with lightly moist vermiculite over the top of the eggs, i also pre warmed the verm upto the correct temp to match the existing.
these were then put in a polly box and padded with news paper.

everything worked out fine they all hatched no probs.

Transporting colubrid eggs is not big deal. I moved 16 hours away with a bunch of snake eggs and they did just fine. I wouldn't use a heat pack. I just set mine in a secure place in the car and off I went. I've also taken near term eggs on the same drive back to FL and watched them hatch at Daytona.

Well, Jason is a known expert, and this is what happened to him, so I would try to not have to do this.

Jason must have had some sort of disastrous temperature spike. From what the rest of you said, it does sound feasible if one avoids temp extremes, especially too hot, and any jostling around.

Well, at least you wont have to move your eggs now.

Also, it may actually be an optimistic sign that there was an actual position to be filled even though your mate didn't get it. Am really hoping this economy thing lightens up! It doesn't give much comfort to realize we are all be in the same boat if said boat is sinking...

I'd have gladly lost the eggs if that's what it took actually. It was a manager position that'd have paid more than what she and I make together now  And it'd have been something she wants to do which would be nice.

but yeah maybe it's a sign that there are frigging JOBS opening up again? This economy freaking SUCKS and it has for 5-6 years now!
