Hats off to Discern.....

Ginter Jun 09, 2011 03:05 PM

I had the good fortune to visit Discern and view his mostly Pituophis collection. We viewed and enjoyed his collection, ate some good local BBQ, and he even layed down some of the innovative musical stylings of characteristic of the name sake DISCERN.

It was refreshing to see his well cared for animals in clean enclosures. Most of his snakes have body weights that are reminiscent of what you would see in healthy wild caught animals as apposed to the commonly obese animals we generally see in captivity.

He has many incredible animals but for the highlights came in the form of his northern pines and bulls. My favorite was his Kingsville Texas red bull! One of the all time reddest sayi I have ever seen! Hands down red! POST another pick of this snake Billy, and thanks for opening up your facility for our visit!!!!

That was very nice of Billy to let you into his facility. Kingsville reds have been on my 'list' for some time. I need more room.........

Thanks John! It was awesome to be able to hang out, eat bbq, and share the collection!!!!!! Such a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are a few pics of the Kingsville Red Bull female that grabbed your attention. Unfortunately, these pics show her colors a tad bit lighter than she really is, IMO:

My buddy, the infamous Scott Robinson, has a Kingsville red bull that is redder than mine. I need to get him to post pics.

I heavily appreciate all of your kind comments about my snakes, my good friend!

From what I have seen of your snakes posted here over the past year or so, I will "second and sustain" John's "Hats off" tribute. WOW! What colors on that bull! A little more black around the saddles and you'd have the equivalent color combo of an Okeetee corn.

What is the age and length of this snake? Was the founder female of the "Kingsville" line similarly toned or were colors enhanced from the founder animal through selective line breeding? Just curious. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks man! I really appreciate your kind comments!

She is a 2004 female, and a little over 5 foot. John said she resembled the founder female. I personally think that the Kingsvilles I have seen lately in the last few years, that ARE actual Kingsvilles with nothing else in them, resemble selective line breeding. The colors seem to be much stronger orange/red at birth, from babies I have seen within years ago, than even my female pictured was.

Maybe the mighty Ginter can post more on that topic.

Took a chance on a male 08 Kingsville that I picked up based on his "baby photo"

He was the most colorful of that particular clutch and showed some great potential initially albeit, more "earth toned"

As he aged however, the earth tone trend persisted and he (I call him Ahnuld) grew to an impressive size. He obviously inherited the "size gene" as he is now just shy of three years old and over six feet long. This is a photo of Ahnuld-the-Red from late February this year right after I brought him up for the year.

I absolutely LOVE this snake for a variety of reasons and the red tones continue to deepen as he ages but he will likely never attain the toning that your female has. A very special snake all the same though and "PERSONALITY" has he...

Thanks Brad! Gets somewhat more difficult to photograph the large ones. Handling large Pituophis that notoriously like to be on the move is one thing. Finding creative ways to get the entire snake in the frame and yet capture details of color and pattern is another...

Great pics and post. Ahnuld the Red is impressive! Makes me wish I had more room.
Discern, it's really cool to see someone in the hobby doing things right, and have your peers vouch for you. It reminds me of that verse in Proverbs (20:12) "The righteous man regards the life of his animal..." That Red Bull looks really RED to me. Beautiful color!

Gotta love that! I disfavor fat snakes.
