? about argentines and export

jsschrei Jun 10, 2011 02:18 PM

I have an argentine that someone is interested in but in conversation with this individual it sounds like he plans to export it for a customer. What are the rules with argentines? I thought you couldn't export them. I want to stop the sale if that is the case.

Thanks in advance!

I believe it takes special paper work from the Fish and Game / FWS to export.
Wild caught B. c. occidentalis specimens are listed under CITES Appendix I and
I think that Captive Bred B. c. occidentalis are listed under CITES Appendix II for Boa constrictor. . . . .
but I'm not at all versed in the import or export of anything.

I'm just recalling from vague memory of reading something in the past.

Argentines are CITES, Appendix I ... no such thing as Appendix II for Captive born.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services will not issue export permits for Argentines. I have spoken directly with them, as many before me, with no success. There are some exceptions for Zoological exchange programs, etc, but nothing that most individuals qualify for.

Interesting that I did find documentation stating "For CITES-APPENDIX-I species, provide a copy of the CITES import permit, or evidence one will be issued by the Management Authority of the country to which you plan to export the specimen(s). In accordance with Article III of the CITES treaty, it is required that import permits are issued before the corresponding export permit.” This was interesting because all my international customers require a copy of my CITES Export permit before they can obtain their CITES Import permit ... kinda sounds like a "dog chasing his tail".

To bad that USFWS does not issue permits, especially for Captive Born, because I get around a dozen international buyers a year wanting my T+ Argentines. The CITES process does not take into consideration Captive Born animals.

Till Next Time ... Bill

PS: I am told that Argentines have been imported into Europe ... obviously illegally ... not worth jail time to me.

Bill,
Thank you so much for taking the time to get this info to me! It was very helpful. I won''t be selling her to this individual then.

There are some states now that regulate "endangered species" from the "red list." It just keeps getting more complicated, even shipping within the U.S.
