And right on to frozen thawed

varanid Jun 11, 2011 11:38 AM

the 4 WS/axanthic hets that hatched out all shed last night and 3 out of 4 took a frozen thawed pinky this morning. A little miffed about the hold out, but oh well. I'll give it a day or two then try again. Hell he may still eat it; I rubbed a shed from my garter all over thep inky then tossed it back in and moved it a bit...maybe that'll do it. But he mostly looked bored when I did that. Still it is in there by the moist hide so maybe.

Question: they hatched out over at least 2 days, but all shed the same day. Is the variation in hatching times normally greater than the variation in shed times?

Cool bro!

If it doesn't accept that, crunch up the snout/head area a bit, or "brain" a F/T pink, then re-offer. This many times gives off a tissue scent they go bonkers over. I do this all the time with more reluctant snakes.

If it doesn't accept either of your offerings, I would wait several days to a week so you know it is starting to get hungry, and doesn't get used to the rodent scent being around all the time. They can go an incredibly long time on their initial yolk reserve until their feeding response "switch" is flipped.

good luck

howdy varanid, its normal for them to shed withtin a day or 2 of hatchin, and your holdout may just still have substansial yolk. boy it is nice when they start on F/T.
and ones that start feeding... hmmm how to say this... lets just say ACCOMODATE them please dont do the weekto10days feeding thing. pinks every 3 days and in 2-4weeks they will be on fuzzies optimal growth now will help establish them as a healthy adult. it really is a mistake to think you can overfeed a king especially a baby growing fla.king! there is also the myth of "powerfeeding" whatever in the F@*!K that that is?!?!,,, i still dont GET it?!?!?!
anyway like i always say listen to your snakes and they will tell you all they need.
offer as many conditions as possible both temps and humidity, hides, etc. watch them... they will tell you what they like.
so one of the parents is an ax/ws? or?

The male was an axanthic from Rainer, the female was a WS from Cherry (both animals are excellent looking IMO, but i may be biased :D).

I always feed juvies heavy. This is the first time raising straight-from-the-egg babies so it's new to me on that end, but I figure I'll feed again Monday or Tuesday, soon as they poop and/or the bulges aren't as prominent. None of the siblings wanted the leftover pink from the hold out so I guess they're full (that one went to a male house snake that takes f/t or live pinks, but nothing with hair...drives me insane). I'm glad I've got a new shipment of feeders coming in cause I only have 30-40 pinks left...there's 100 in that shipment plus some fuzzies (I'm low on those too) so that should see me till these are on hoppers (which I have a few hundred of).

The second clutch (from the same axanthic and a hypo) has started shedding. So far 2/3 the clutch has shed, to within 6 hours of each other. It's just weird, cause they took nearly 2 full days from first to last out of the egg.
