Not a king snake, but...

mrkent Jun 11, 2011 11:55 PM

Found this red spotted gartner snake (Thamnophis sirtalis concinnus) a couple of days ago while walking on the edge of a field in Clark County Washington. He is probably one of the prettier ones I have seen, and I was able to get some pics before sending him on his way.

I zoomed in the second picture and like the way it shows his keeled scales.

I love the deep black belly on that guy! Are they protected up there? I think I would have kept that one if they aren't.

It is my understanding that all reptiles are off limits in Washington. Not even supposed to pick them up!

Haven't looked to see if that's true or not but...

What could be the possible reasoning behind such a law/regulation... there you are on a field trip, hoping to show your kids a turtle, some lizard, a snake, something they've never seen before... and you can't even pick one up?

Makes as much sense as my great state of Maine having once considered how to charge tourist for leaf peeping in the fall during the foliage change... I could picture the state trooper... "Hey I saw you look at that tree, gotta permit for that?"

I get a headache sometimes trying to make sense of things.

Yeah the law is the same here for the Florida Indigo! You are not allowed to molest them. Which actually comes from the latin which means "disturb" them. At least that's how it was written last time I read it many years ago.
