Second alterna clutch

mrkent Jun 12, 2011 12:03 AM

This is my smaller female, almost finished laying a couple of days ago.

She layed 10 eggs, then quit yesterday with two to go. One was right at her cloaca, so today I gently massaged it, and it popped right out. Doesn't look fertile, but the first 10 look fine.

The last egg is a few inches up from her cloaca, and massage didn't help move it down. She was hungry though and ate two fuzzies. I am hoping that will give her some energy to go ahead and move the last egg down.

The last egg is out. The last two are bad, as evidenced by the bad smell of one that was in the incubator (in a separate container) for just a couple of days.

The first ten all look good. I candled them and saw veins in all of them.

It is interesting to compare the size of these to the first clutch at 7 weeks of incubation. The first set have grown alot!

I am glad they are out too. I wonder if I should have waited another year to breed her. It seems to have taken alot out of her, and she is very thin. She ate two fuzzies on Saturday, but hasn't wanted any more yet. Hopefully she will put the weight back on without too much trouble.

I have read various post of differing opinions, some saying to wait until they are a certain size, others saying to breed them when they ovulate. She was obvious when she ovulated, just like my larger female, so I went ahead and put the male with her.

On another note, my mlae still has not resumed eating after breeding, and it has been 2 months. He is getting pretty thin, but has not shown any interest in eating. It is hard not to worry.
