Your question is a little unclear.

Are you asking if it comes from fresh or brackish water or if you should give it fresh or brackish water?

I don't know where they come from but I would never give any animal something other than fresh water unless it is a salt watter fish.

Good luck with your new snake.

While Acrochordus granulatus does occur in brackish water (I've found them on sandy ocean grass beds), I think javanicus is a freshwater animal.

I have tried to keep two different species of Acrochordus without luck (and Herpeton as well). The problem I have always had is the white-spot disease they get. There have been a few notes here on KS as well as other places on the web talking about this disease and how it is apparently incurable.

The disease has been blamed on stress, water quality, and other mysterious conditions. I've never heard a definitive way to prevent it. The problem is that some people don't experience it and so they don't know how they prevented it, and others get it on their snakes, but they always die, so they can't figure out how to deal with it succesfully.

I would love to know the answer definitively, because I think Acrochordus and Herpeton are among the most interesting snakes I've ever tried to keep.

I have heard that having aged fresh water is helpful, but I have also seen people fail when using that.

It seems same answer no one knows exactly how to care and mostly opinion with these guys. I am trying a slight brackish water at like 5%. Put some rosy reds in today so waiting to try to get him to eat. So we shall see thanx for advice.

Both arafurae and javanicus are predominately fresh water snakes, sometimes found in brackish water of 1 to 2%. A 5% salinity would be higher than these snakes would ever experience in the wild. Standard sea water is only between 3 and 3.5%
