County. This guy was pretty big. I don't know if this characteristic of all Gophers, just Great Basins or just Great Basins on this particular road, but this guy REFUSED to move. We stopped the car, got out and walked right up to him. He just sat there like the road was his. Sadly further down the road was one of his fellows who I'm guessing exhibited this behavior w/ a car.

Spectacular GB! And to live in southern CA where any person who favors the Pituophis has access to four subspecies within a few hours drive to the east or north in addition to the local population.
A lot of snake species will go rigid initially when encountered in the open (as in the middle of a road). Probably more true of snakes that are still in the process of warming. They may assume that their cryptic coloration will somehow prevent their discovery as they seem to rely on this strategy as a first response to danger. They (some) quickly change temperament once their discovery is evident to them and their cover is blown.
