bearded dragon breeding

mike_ny Sep 29, 2003 09:24 PM

i have two bearded dragons who have grown up together in the same cage since they were about two months old...ones a male and the other a female...what is the likelihood that they will naturally mate?

How old are they? The male can really stress the female w/ constant breeding attempts.

they are pretty young...but i was recently able to determine sex...they get along excellently and i am in the process of purchasing a bigger tank for them...it should be on its way actually

The concern is, at 6 mo. they will start mating behavior. They should not mate until they are at the least 18 months.
They will need to be separated or your new tank will need a partition until that time.

should i consider purchasing more females for the future to reduce stress?....or will that cause a possible conflict between the original two and any more i put in?

...Males & females need to be housed separately no matter how many females you have. UNLESS you are breeding them, & then they should be separated after they've mated. The males will constantly attempt to breed & that's very stressful to the females whether he's successful or not. As a result, your female's health will be jeopardized & her life span cut short.

If you plan on breeding them & they're not siblings, then keep them separated until they're at least 18 mths. old, as Christy said.

If you don't plan on breeding &/or they ARE siblings, keep them separated forever.
