Spirulina and Chlorella in FF Medium

Spar Sep 29, 2003 09:27 PM

I posted this in one of the posts below, but I think it is too far down now for people to notice... anyway,

I am going to start making my own FF medium now and would like to get the Blue to start showing on my Sipiwlini's a little better. I saw in one of the posts that either Spirulina or Chlorella would help this out. Should I use both of these or just one or the other (whichever helps more for the Blue color)? Also, what measurement (in cups, TB's, etc.) should I use of those 2 ingredients if I am using the following medium ratios:

4 cups Potatoe Flakes
1 Cup Brewers Yeast
1 Cup Powdered Sugar
and 50/50 Water/Vinegar

And last of all, what is a good site that sells these in Bulk and at a reasonable price?

Cliff,
I use spirulina in my media and, although I don't measure it, I would have to guess that I use about a tablespoons per 2 cups of media. Aliitle goes a long way.
I also use spirulina and chlorella when I dust my flies. My Lime Green Sips, in particular, have outstanding color. I've never done a comparison with frogs that I did not suppliment with these so - does it work? - couldn't say for sure. Doesn't hurt either so I continue to use them.
Once I have a few more Sips morph I just may try this experiment with two groups of frogs from the same blood line.
I usually get my spirulina from Erin at ED's Flymeat or Patrick at Saurian.

Thank you for your response. I will add the Spirulina to my next batch. I ended up buying from www.bulkfoods.com. It was much cheaper there so I ordered both the Spirulina and Brewers Yeast.

Thanks again!

If you wanted to get both Spirulina and Chlorella it would have been cheaper to get it from Saurian.net than Bulkfoods.com Just thought I would point that out.

As Mark said, you can find it much cheaper elsewhere...But also keep in mind that just a little bit goes a very long way.

When calculating out the price per ounce of mix it comes to $1.47 from bulkfoods.com, and $2.81 from Saurian. I checked out lots of places before finally making a purchase.

The only difference is the quantity you must buy:
Bulkfoods:
16 ounces @ $19.66 of Spirulina
20 ounces @ $34.23 of Chlorella
= $53.89, shipping included

Saurian:
16 ounces (total) of mix @ $45.00, shipping included.

It isn't necessary to buy that much obviously, but I personally don't mind storing a couple jars in a cabbinet.
