Egg going bad

ohernz Jun 13, 2011 07:58 PM

On June 5th one of my pastel females laid 9 good eggs and a slug from a pastel x pastel pairing. A few days ago I noticed that one of the eggs hadn't developed blood vessels and looked yellowish inside when I candled it. Today I noticed a small patch of mold starting to grow on it. The egg is attached to a good fertile egg. Should I try to separate them? I am afraid of rupturing the good egg. Should I leave them together? I am afraid that if I do that the good egg might rot also. What should I do? This is the first time this happens to me and I don't really know what to do.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

I used dental floss to separate a bad egg from a couple good eggs this year.

The good egg should survive mold or not. I have some pied X het pied eggs that are in the same situation, I'm not worried.

Thanks for the comments. I had already tried dental floss without success before I posted my message, but I guess it did do something because this morning I was able to separate the eggs without problems.

Usually once they have been dead for a little while they get wet and separate pretty easily from the good eggs.

In the future, you can always dust your eggs with some gold bond to prevent the mold from spreading onto the good eggs. It's good preventative medicine.

Hi,

You can very easily separate the two eggs with your hands if you are patient. I have been doing this for decades and it is very easy to accomplish. Get your fingers as close as possible to the point where the eggs are joined, then gently put pressure on both eggs. You will notice that they begin to slowly pull apart almost immediately, keep the pressure on both eggs and allow them to separate s-l-o-w-l-y. Just keep the pressure on until they come apart. If the bad egg ruptures, just rinse the good egg(s) off with room temp water. good luck.
