First clutch ever...

creeper53 Jun 14, 2011 12:19 PM

Hey all,
We have just placed our first ever clutch of eggs in our "fool proof" incubator. We have the heat set at 89 degrees and the humidity at 90 degrees. These are based on 1 part research and 1 part instructions from the incubator. Are we on the right track? We have slight condensation on the lid and two of the eggs are showing some dimpling. This seems too soon. We have not yet candled. Any advise would be wonderful. Please excuse my "newbie-ness."
Thanks,

Bill

First off: NOTHING is "foolproof".
That's a jinx if I've ever heard one...
Second, depending on how long the eggs have been incubating, dimpling is fine; they usually dimple two weeks before hatching. Anything before that, and they are dehydrated.
I'm guessing if they are as new as the tone of your post reflects, you are nowhere near 90% humidity. Increase the humidity.

Thanks for the response. The incubator we are using has preset buttons for heat and humidity... bells and whistles to be honest. The eggs are only a couple of days old. Is 90 degrees the ideal humidity for bp eggs?

Thanks,

Bill

We have added a thermal hydrometer into the incubator for a second read-out. It appears that the "fool-proof" settings are not accurate. we are now reading 89.4 degrees and 92%.

Thanks,

Bill

first off humidity does not mean that there is water droplets forming on lid of incubation chamber. realitive humidity is the amount of water saturation the air is holding. i would be concerned about standing water in the incubation box. I would have to say that your media you are incubating in is to dry if they are already dimpiling and i would be willing to bet you do not have 92 percent humidity. start by rechecking all humidistats just like the one on incubator i would bet dollar for dollar the store bought one is also wrong.what are you using vermiculite or hatchrite and how are eggs set up?

We are using Hatchrite and have just added a small amount of water into it. Hopefully the provided picture will help explain our set up.

Thanks,

Bill

Lol...
If your eggs are dimpling after only one week, you've got problems. Humidity problems. Also, humidity is not registered in degrees, it's registered in percentage.
Your humidity is too low if you have dimpled eggs. Increase your humidity until your eggs 're-inflate' or they will die.
