Candling Eggs

ROC Jun 14, 2011 10:08 PM

This is my first clutch of hog eggs. They were laid May 2.

Out of the clutch, I've got some that have definately gone bad but others still look good on the outside.

When I candle these eggs and assuming they'll hatch, what should I be seeing at this point? Can you see the snake inside?

Thanks for the help.

Ross

Ross,

You should see lots of red veins. You may see a dark shadow looking object but it's hard unless you have a good light and a dark place.

If the egg is good the veins will take over the egg as it matures.

Hope that helps.

Greg Bennett

Thanks a lot, Greg. I do see veins and on one I have seen a dark mass against the side of the egg. I was just worried that with the hatch date a few weeks off I should be seeing something else. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

No problem. Congrats on your first clutch. What was the breeding?

The breeding was an albino to a possible het. So we'll see how things go these next few weeks and see if and what pips out. Should have more exciting pairings for next year, though.
