Surprise. Cal King pair Incompatable!

denbar Jun 15, 2011 03:00 PM

I sure thought these guys would be compatable, but I was wrong. I now have some double het babies! They are nice and plump.

Ve-e-e-ery interesting! What are the parents genetics? Or what did you think they were? I'm not up with my Cal King morphs.

Jorge, I got them from another hobbyist. They originally came from two different sources. As it turns out the genetic lines are not the same. So, they can provide me with countless years of experimentation! Ha!

I right with you, would have naver guessed to get normals looking snakes from that pair. Where did you get them? Reputable breeders? I guess you may have a new project now. Congrats on the babies, too!

I would think one of them is albino and one of them is lavender albino, which is why you got normal looking double-het babies.

Neither one of them looks anything like a "standard" albino. By the way the one you posted is beautiful. I had a similar one in the past.

Your female reminds me of this morph (below) which isn't lavender or hypo ... no one could tell me what it was... it died suddenly for no apparent reason.

Male appear to be a lavender

They certainly do look alike. Whatever the case I guess I can hold back a male and get him to size to breed back to his mom.

It is not as simple as a lavender amel and a T neg amel. Back in the early days there were 2 well known strains... The JD and JR strain. But since then, others have popped up. So compatibilty is more difficult without them being clutchmates.

Who knows what 2 strains you have there. But personally, I find it more interesting to get normal double hets. Just breed the hets back together and see what you get. I think that is a whole lot more interesting to work wit than just plain old albino babies.

Yes it will be interesting if I have the patience to hold back some of them and breed them together. I know there are different strains out there. Fascinating how they can look so much alike, but get those looks from different genes!

JD and JR strains were incompatible lavender strains. The T- Amel was another gene altogether. So at the time there were 3 known albino cal king morphs. As you said, there are even more now so who knows what strain the original poster has. Just wanted to clarify as your post could be confusing to some that don't know the history of the different amel strains.

the two snakes the poster posted are lavenders.

Yep, but your post made it sound as if the jd and jr were two different forms...t- white and t lav. Both are strains of lav. That's all I was trying to clarify.

Very interesting indeed. However, I did notice one has a light iris while the other has grey iris. I've seen this ruby pupil/darker iris combo on other snakes that were non-albino.

Not really all that helpful... just and observation.

You are right Aubrey. The females eyes are not quite as dark as the males. The body colors are so similar though.

Hmm- is it possible that one is a Blue Eyed Blonde and the other is a lavender? Just a thought....

denbar Jun 16, 2011 05:57 PM

That would be cool. But they are both 3 years old and neither have eyes that are transforming into blue.
