Bill Haast Passed away ........

DMong Jun 16, 2011 11:43 PM

Sadly, I was just told by a friend just a short while ago that the great herpetology icon Bill Haast passed away yesterday. He was 100 years old.

Very sad...... He will be greatly missed by countless people.

100 years old...WOW!

I wonder if the envenomation had anything to do with extending his lifespan?

That is really sad, but he did live a long life. My dad had the pleasure of meeting him at the Linger Lodge Restaurant in Sarasota FL by my house years ago. RIP

Sad news Wed. night for sure......Years ago when I'd go see him, it was always a special time. He dedicated himself to helping others and what could be better than that? His stories were great and he was a pioneer.I always thought there'd be a Bill Haast around.....
RIP Bill..

Yeah I lived in Maimi for years and never saw him when he was there, and I will always regret missing out on personally seeing a legend!

He was definitely a remarkable man who got to live his dream. I had the privilege of visiting the Serpentarium several times in the early '70's. Back then the highlight was on Sunday afternoons he would catch a huge King Cobra freehanded on the lawn, while the crowd stood around watching. I am looking at an autographed copy of the book, Cobras In His Garden, which I got during one visit. It's dated 1972. I loved going to visit there. In addition to his family, there are a lot of others who will miss him.

hi, I was working at Ross Allens around that time, maybe a year or so before, 69 to 71. I know I moved to Ariz in 71.

I met Bill a couple times, I did not know him well.

At the time I did not understand those fellas(Bill and Ross) getting bit all the time, I pretty much thought they were just doing that for attention, hahahahahahahaha, yea, two weeks ago, I took another hot bite. My 11th but only three hot bites. I guess I understand a bit better now.

He looked very very old, back then, but he kept on keeping on, and you cannot give a better compliment then that. May he rest in peace.

The rattlesnake shot was used as a Ross Allen postcard for a while, It was taken filming a Wild Kingdom.

The corals were just a couple of huge ones. One was just brought in and the person held it behind the head for several hours. It was nearly dead. Best wishes

wow FR those shots are cool...I used to bring 'em both corals..and I brought Ross a few big'n's....one was well over 40".....but I never handled them at all, so I know I wan't the one holding that one behind the head! haha
