Decorating an aluminum screen cage

crankyveileds Sep 29, 2003 11:40 PM

I'm having trouble hanging (and keeping up) vines and sticks in my aluminum cages. With the old black screen cages I used the bars of the frame to tie the stuff to but the aluminum ones don't have bars. I tried using string and nylon thread to tie up vines but my fat veileds keep knocking it down. Is there a better way to do this or am I doomed to make weekly repares for the rest of their lives?

Thanks

try aquarium sealant. I have not used it (no need - yet!) but it is often recommended. Once it is cured (dry)it is no longer toxic. If you are doing a lot you may want to to move your cham to another setup temporarily. You can also use a hot glue gun, but again, remove your cham so there are no accidents - ever had hot glue dripped on you? - OUCH!

Hi-

Aquarium sealant has a VERY strong smell that burns. It takes 24hrs to dry and for the smell to go away. So make sure if you are using it around chameleons that you allow it to dry in a well ventilated area. I use small UV resistant black zip ties to secure the bio vines to the screen. Some use twist ties (they will rust) some use fishing line (a pain to thread and tie off) so in the end I find zip ties to be the best, safest, fastest, and cleanest way to secure things to the screen. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies! Will aquarium sealant work on the big fat bendable branches? Where do I get it? Also does anyone have a pic of how they did it? I just want to be sure I know exactly what I'm doing.
Thanks

Hi-

You can get aquarium sealant at homedepot and the like in the paint department. In the above post I explained my view on using it, and would advise against it. Just get the zip ties you will be much happier with them.

I don't want to use zip ties because there is nothing to secure them to unless I put holes in the screen which would allow crickets to escape. I tried a hot glue gun but my big fat male veiled was too heavy and it fell. Any other ideas?

Hi-

You have an all aluminum screen cage, right? I have the very same cages, use the zip ties to secure the bio vines to the screen. They go right in and out of the screen, and will support your big veiled. I have pothos plants hanging from some of the biovines and it doesn't pull the screen enough for any large cricket to get out of the cage. Hope this helps!
