Feeding Too Much? Too Little?

medic8388 Jun 21, 2011 09:05 PM

Hello,
I'm still new to snakes so I wanted to post my log for the ball python to make sure the feeding, sheding, and weight gain are approperate. I bought the snake secondhand so I'm not sure of his exact age. The snake appears healthy and active and accepts food with no trouble.

Date:
4/10 - Purchase
4/16 - Fed Sm. Rat (49g)
4/30 - Weight 592g
5/2 - Fed Sm. Mouse (23g)
5/12 - Fed Sm. Rat (50g)
5/18 - Shed Complete
Weight 644g
5/23 - Fed Rat (102g)
6/7 - Fed Rat (101g)
6/9 - Weight 778g
6/15 - Fed Rat (100g)
6/19 - Blue

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for helping me take better care of my snake

Looks like your taking great care of your snake. Often when someone only has a snake or 2 they have to buy from the petstore and the meals can vary depending on what they have at the time. If that's the case keep feeding as you have. I like to feed rats of appropriate size only. The rat should be a little smaller than the widest part of the snakes body for steady growth. If you want to bulk it up faster feed a slightly smaller rat twice weekly. Good luck!! Chris Hall

I think your doing great. I like to feed twice a week if they will do it. Once they hit a stable weight and they are breeding they go to once a week. Great Job.

Bill

You are doing an excellent job of documenting the care of your snake! I feed weekly in summer and every other week in winter for adults. Juveniles continue on weekly feeding year round. I think if your snake continues to gain weight, you are providing him with everything he needs.

Thank you for the replies. This morning I was treated to a wonderful one-piece shed so I'm sure he will be hungry. I took a picture of his tank, I want to make sure it is set up correctly. it's a 40g (I think...) with heat provided by UTH (I have a piece of tile under the substrate over the UTH). The warm hide is over the UTH and behind the water dish is a cool side hide. I am having the hardest time finding a water dish that is just right so at the moment I'm using the ice bin from the freezer.
