Hi, I just got a baby savannah monitor. I wanted to know how big of a cage does a savannah monitor need when it's full grown.
Thanks.
Mike.

Well, i read the other reply to this post and made not too much sence to me in answering you're question.
Put it this way. You know what the savannah needs so providing the size could really depend on everything. If you restrict him to a insect and minimal rodent diet, He will remain small. Also male/female plays a role in how big they get.
A friend of mine has a sav which is 32lbs and nearly 4.5ft long.
I like seeing enclosures that are atleast 1.5 times the lenth of the lizard and the width of it being atleast 3/4 the lenth. Larger would be better.
For an adult, a good 24"high enclosure would be enough, but make sure you have a secure lid(of course)

1)chances are they dont know because they are asking.
"If you restrict him to a insect and minimal rodent diet, He will remain small. Also male/female plays a role in how big they get. "
2)2 things, they will eat until they are full, and if I fed my monitors enough insects they would still be large but feeding them only insects is difficult and not near as good for them. An ackie or some other small species can eat insects their whole lives, but a medium or large species needs alot more than that. Rodents, peeps, whole animal foods are the best. Next usually a male is larger than a female but it can vary from one idividual to the next, Sobek is my female Albig which is almost 6 ft at under 22 months old and 20lbs. Ive only ever heard of one female outside of her being larger than 5ft, but there are many males that size and smaller than her, and a few larger.
"A friend of mine has a sav which is 32lbs and nearly 4.5ft long."
3) This Id like to see a 4.5 ft 32 lb bosc monitor, it would have to be as long as my old male bosc 'Saurian' who was the longest Ive ever seen proof of (4ft 6 inches)only your buddies would be built like a beach ball, thats far heavier than Rusty (Dales bosc), who was very obese at supposedly 20lbs (I dont believe he was that heavy though, I actually use a digital scale).
"I like seeing enclosures that are atleast 1.5 times the lenth of the lizard and the width of it being atleast 3/4 the lenth. Larger would be better."
4)This isnt too far off, at least the length of the animal in width is a minimum size and 2 times its length is a minimum for length. It is hard to keep up with their growth when they are healthy and cages get outgrown quickly.
"For an adult, a good 24"high enclosure would be enough, but make sure you have a secure lid(of course)"
5)The height can be high enough to allow climbing (4-7ft) and to help in making temps etc usefull to the animal. As for lids, make the top a solid part of the structure because a cage big enough for an adult will need front opening doors, or a ladder inside and out to get access to the cage through the top, besides humidity and heat escape through removable tops too easily.
Is a medium sized ground dwelling African monitor that obtains a length from 2.5-4 ft and 4-10lbs. The size of the cage should be from 4x8x4 ft to as large as you can provide (a room etc). This should have been asked and husbandry researched before getting the animal but most people take this route that you have. If you do the right things for the animal ASAP then you will have a happy healthy monitor, if not a miserable, unhealthy and someday dead one. Ask questions on their husbandry and to make sure its right, many of us will answer as soon as we can get to your questions.
