hatchlings don't shed or eat.

pedfan Jun 23, 2011 01:21 AM

The past 2 years my hatchlings are not shedding or eating right after they hatch and none survive. anyone have any ideas why this is happening? The breeders are normals, don't know the age of the female and the male was hatched in 1987. Of the 7 eggs she has had 3 have hatched but never lived past 1 month.

Maybe the two adults carry a lethal gene. Stop breeding them and try breeding a different male to her.

it would help if you would provide some pertinent information.
what temps are keeping the babies at? what humidity? what are trying to feed them? how are you incubating them? do you have any pictures?

to be honest, even if they are not eating they would live for more than a month if everything else is correct. if a baby ball had water it could easily live for months and months without eating.
in my opinion im going to say you are most likely doing something wrong that is causing them to die. please give all info you can so we can help them....

I incubate at about 88 degrees, humidity is between 70 to 75 degrees, keep them in a rack so temp is about 84 degrees and they always have water, tried to feed them live or dead fuzzys or rat pinks.I don't understand why they never went in to a shed 10 to 14 days after hatchimg. Either way i won't be breeding them together any more. Seems like it's genetic more so than breeding error. What cha think?

I had a similar experience last yr, but only one of a clutch of six. A pastel female. Didn't shed or eat when it should have.It hatched 19 june, by late july she was getting skinny, so I force fed fuzzy mice.I would put the live fuzzy crawler in her bin for 30-45 minutes, when she didn't eat I would thump the mouse and force feed. I realy didn't think she was going to make it, but was determined she wouldn't die from lack of effort on my part. She finaly shed 12 aug. I kept watching and trying to get her to eat and then forcing her. On 05 dec I checked about 30 min. after putting a crawler in w/her and she was wrapped up! She has fed like a pig ever since. I fed twice a wk till she was 250-275gm she is now 665gm and doing great!
Don't give up and you may be rewarded with success.
