Serious thoughts about this forum!

a153fish Jun 23, 2011 06:42 PM

I know I play around a lot but I wanted to say something serious about this forum. When I first came here I found it hard to take a lot of the posts I read, I wasn't used to some of the people here and many Ideas seemed almost ludicrous. Some still seem very strange to me, but one thing is certain. This forum is addictive! I don't think there's is one day that I don't at least pop in and take a quick look at what's going on here. Even when there is something that get's me so piturbed that I want to rind someones neck, I still am glued to the computer. This place has a wide variety of people from all walks of life, and from all ages. Many even from different countries, at least of origin anyway. We all have one thing in common and one thing only. We love KingSnakes! There are some very knowledgable people here and every question gets answered. Many people come here and just read, but never post, that's ok too! The bottom line is this place is not boring. Imagine if all we did was talk about scale counts and brumation temps. This place would put everyone to sleep. However name calling has to be the worst element here, and really needs to stop. We can disagree without instantly calling someone an insulting name. So dispite having to endure some posts that, make me pull my hair out, I am glad this forum exists, and I think Cindy is giving us as much freedom as she can to be who we are. I've had many posts deleted from here and probably deserved to be, But all in all, I raise a glass, to my favorite place to hang out! I visit about a dozen sites but most my time is spent here. So for those about to Herp.....WE SALUTE YOU!!!!!!!!

Hi Jorge,

This is a funny place, people come and want others to be their friends, yet, they do not treat them like their friends.

Most friends, push each individuals limits, calling names is part of that. Like, if you were my friend, I would call you a bonehead, not in a bad way, or you would not be my friend, but a bonehead because your so set in your ways. This is this, that is that, Yet, your new and really do not know what this and that is.

See, I just called you a bonehead in a nice way, just like if you were my close friend.

While this is a forum about kingsnakes, its really about people, as the snakes do not post!

So what we get is what people always do, they poke, prod, fool with, make fun of, test, etc etc eachother. No different then high school, the boy scouts, any sports team, etc, its what people do.

For instance, if I put a treefrog in your back pocket, and you sat down, and well squished the poor frog. Some would laught their bums off, some would say, poor frog, others would ask, where the frog come from, and one may eat the frog(theres always one of those)

Which means, no matter what is said, its taken in a thousand different ways. The posts are person to person. That is, I am talking to Jorge, but others will reply like I was talking to them.

So what happens is, many people get their undies in a wad. Its going to happen, and its going to happen in the church choir as well. Its what people do.

All in all, context is the most important aspect of forums, make sure what your reading is for you, or about you, or even to you. Before your undies get all knotted up.

Personally, there is no reality to forums, its words on a screen. Fake names, etc etc etc. What do you expect from a place with fake names, and no real person behind them.

So make it fun, don't take it personal, and hopefully pick out some information you enjoy. I like pictures. Lots of pictures

Everything else is words by people I do not know. I do not care about art pictures, I love pictures that capture the snake. After all, its the snakes I love. Cheers

Well not so new anymore I have learned to adjust. Your right it is a lot like high school, lol. I never dealt well with the in crowds. I was many times a loner because I hate hipocracy and being something your not, just to fit in. But we do see all types here, and another improtant factor is, many members here have a history together, and it isn't always a positive one. There are many opinions about how to care for the snakes also, and that's all it is, just opinions. Once we throw a snake in any cage it's un-natural, so we can only satisfy it's basic needs at best. If the snakes thrive and they reproduce then I would say your doing a decent job. Ofcourse there are exceptions to every rule. Even sickly snakes can lay healthy eggs sometimes, but in general, it's a good litmus test. All in all the biggest problem is ego, and there's a lot of it here. It get's in the way, and clouds judgment, and twists truth. We all wrestle with it, some feed it, some feed off of it, some deny it, but we all have it.

Actually most here are or were like you. Loners, that is one reason we kept snakes. We did not need the confirmation of the group. We would stand alone.

But once in a group(of loners) we will then clump into and do what was natural in high school, or college, its just people.

Also, I think your missing the point, you call all these things opinions. Well I think whats going on is more then opinions. Its different levels of success.

Like your example of captive reproduction. theres no one level, not in captivity or in nature. There are a million levels. In short, thats how they allow hunting permits. They do not count deer for example, they measure rainfall and plant growth. That will predict the output the deer have.

Again, there are levels of success, not just success. And this bothers people. They(the masses) seem to want everyone to be alike, or their results to be alike. The problem is, the animals were not designed that way.

They surely were not designed to lay the same year after year. They are designed to take advantage of good years, and exsist through bad years. Yet in captivity, we want them to follow a set pattern.

The absolute truth is, to reproduce is the minimum level of success, Not the maximum. The quality of reproduction indicates the success level. In nature its rainfall, prey support.

in captivity success is based on quality of support, only you, the keeper, provide it.

So its not opinions, its methods.

My only envolvement is to keep letting you know that the snakes are MORE then what your doing.

Let me think back, the point of this thread was, a four ft cage is not a large cage for a snake that gets six foot. Its surely not large enough to allow for any manner of inherent choices.

Yes, you can keep them alive in there, get some eggs, but please don't expect normal behavior when the snake cannot leave its own footprint. Cheers
