It's a love hate relationship...

KcTrader Jun 23, 2011 06:45 PM

I really love this time of year, egg laying and hatching but I hate waiting for the little buggers to crawl out. These are from a PH amel striped line L.ruthveni X PH amel Striped L.ruthveni. I proved out the amel traits so they are no longer PH. Yepee! Now I am waiting to see if they are Amel Striped or if I am really lucky maybe the first one Amel Super Stripe ( That I know of being produced)...The suspense is killing me!!!!!

The first to pip

The second

Both together

Good luck Jimmy! What is that substrate your using for incubation? It looks like little rocks?

It is little rocks basically, ceramic or porcelain might even be clay(can't remember). It is made by Repashy. It's called Super Hatch. I started using it the past couple of years. It works great and you can reuse it. Just bake it in the oven to kill all bacteria. You soak it in water for about 10 minutes and then drain through a cheese cloth. I let mine drain for about 10 minutes and add it to the containers. I set up all the containers at one time and throw them in the incubator. It holds moisture really well and I usually don't have to add any water at all. I also haven't had any problems with mold either.

I had 100% hatch rate last year and so far this year I lost 4 but I don't think that it was from the medium, the eggs were questionable anyway.

I look every day for the first pip. So far more eggs have dents and the dents are increasing. One of the eggs is beginning to look fairly eminent, what with multiple dents. I guess it is time I got my act together and prepared their new tubs.

I sometimes leave mine in the incubator until first shed then transfer them. I have seen your set up so yea it's getting closer to have everything ready. No need to have them crawling around stirring up your other eggs. I take my tricolor hogs out right away, this year I may transfer them into their own containers when they pip, I lost a couple of hatchlings due to the first one out disturbing all the rest and flipping eggs. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Yeah, I think I will put the pipped pyro eggs in a smaller container that will fit inside the lasagna pan they are in now so they don't bumble around and disturb my bull snake eggs.

It sure is! Christmas in June is always nice, too!!! Atleast for us adults. I think this time of year for this hobby is more exciting than the holidays.
