How often do you feed a gopher?

calebjg Jun 25, 2011 11:22 AM

I have a pair of Sonoran gophers and they have doubled in size in the last 3mnths.I feed them a weaner rat every 7-10 days but they act like they are constantly hungry.
The one is easily 3ft now and the other a bit smaller.I havent really measured them but the bigger one seems rather cramped in a 20 gal. I didnt realize they would eat so much as compared to my boas and pythons, not to mention how active they are.
So am I feeding them enough? I dont know how old they are but it just amazing to me how fast they are growing. When do they reach their adult size? How big will they get?
The one is as big as an adult cornsnake I had once already.

Just about every gopher, pine or bull snake that I have acts like they are hungry. I have an adult female albino Southern Pine who after laying her eggs took a medium rat and 6 adult mice. I usually do not feed that much to an individual but she needs to be putting some weigh back on. If your gopher snakes are 3 feet then I would either up the size of the food you give them or offer a couple of the size youve been feeding. In my experiance I have heard and found that feeding multiple smaller meals is better than one big one. My Bull snakes that hatched late last year are close to 40 inches. That comes from the multiple smaller meals. Lots of people over feed their animals. I would say since they are young snakes every 5-6 days would be good to feed them. Hope this helps.
