boa genetics and liars

STconstrictors Jun 25, 2011 11:43 AM

Can we all just label them as what they are. I've purchased and bred several 100% hets with no result in what I'm looking for. Even from the NOBODYs and BIG BOYS Yet, I sell off or trade possibles and they prove out for my customers. Ruin my projects over a few bucks.. Its going to discourage all the new comers and plus you are just a scum bag. Peace

I think it's happened to all of us that's been around long, unfortunately. I usually only get possibles from personal friends, or when they're sold at or near "normal" pricing (then only if I need normals; getting something else is just a bonus).

Lately I have seen possible hets sold as 100% , even ones I have produced that I personally know aren't 100%. Half of what I am talking about is from people who are only snake friends, it doesn't get personal anymore...

Spencer
Thats sad bro, this hobby is supposed to be about honesty i have liars and have seen this 'het' crap before.

Ive been burned on a het before. Years ago i bred a kahl albino to a 'het' and out of 22 babies there wasnt one yellow snake.

I moved the newspaper with my mouth open as i was so happy to make some albino boas. Its not just the initial investment its the years of growing up and you finally get the thing to breed and its not a het. i know i was pissed.

It's amazing what people will do for a few extra bucks. Just about every boa I've bought was really unhealthy, which says alot about the characters of the breeders that it's all about the money not the animals. I think it's unfortunate that's happening to you Spencer and hopefully you can let me know who these sellers are for future reference.

I think a few of the people selling things have no idea what they are selling too. in a local classified ad online I have seen albino ball python "pos het spider" yeah he had the worlds only recessive spider. I called him and he said it was produced from a spider het albino to an albino by a very well known breeder. I know the breeder didn't tell him that it was a pos het spider due to the reputation this breeder has. had he only known it was the only one in the world he probably would have kept it! so some people don't understand genetics enough to be making these sales

I agree with just about everything you all have said. What's worse, too, is the people who buy an animal as 100% het for something that never breed it out before selling it themselves (for any reason) and then only sell it as a possible het because they wont sell something they are not 100% certain of..... those are the people who miss a sale because of their honesty while the frauds will tell potential buyers almost anything to make a buck!!! I have friends that have screwed themselves in the name of not screwing a customer... its sad but more frustrating when you see their point then watch a scammer with a pocket full of money.

Heres one that will make you squirm: My first boa purchase. I went to a Repticon to buy an albino. Thats all I had ever wanted since being a kid. Somehow, there were none there as I went the last few hours of the last day of the show. Anyway, I ended up being talked into buying a pair of boas "for a great price" that " when they grow up, will look exactly like Albinos!!" so I was told. Ummmm, yeah... I was sold a pair of PERUVIANS!!!! Shame on me for not being more educated at the time, yes. But, years later, with all the knowledge I have gained, it still irks me to see those people still at their table at every Repticon in our area, continuing to sell their consignment snakes!!! Shame on me...but SHAME on them and people like them!!!

A boa freak and former friend TCDROVEr picked up an 08 og hypo jungle that was 66%het albino and 50% het anery. He know the gamble and questioned me until finally We all know the results of his litter. Congrats Tom, small result but amaZing to see... Boa breeding are my passion but some of these guys are just snake collectors...

Jeremy,
You might want to consider doing a little more homework in the future and/or changing the reason you buy something.

There are a LOT of excellent, reputable people in the boa industry. To consistently find those that are selling sick snakes certainly illuminates the fact that there are still too many "bad guys", but it also uncovers the fact that you're not asking enough questions. Any seller should be willing and able to offer up NUMEROUS recommendations, a knowledge of the animal they're selling (history, health, feeding and shedding habits, captive care requirements for the (sub)species, etc.), etc., and not shy away from that one bit.

It sounds like the folks you're buying from are staying in business because of a factor that is not related to the health and well being of their animals... like... price - or something else that after 15-20 years with the animal, simply doesn't matter.

So again, I'd recommend reevaluating why you buy, and who you buy from. If you do so, you'll likely find that your next animal is healthier than any other you've ever purchased.

What's written above is purely my opinion. In fact, MOST of what you read on the internet is someone's opinion. Don't take it too seriously
