I must suck at popping

varanid Jun 26, 2011 06:20 PM

I appear to have lost my smallest 3 probes (new set ordered already) so I tried my hand at popping...and it was a freaking disaster I've got snake crap all over me, but going through 7 I didn't get one set of hemipenes out, and I'm 99% sure that at least *one* of those is a male.

Also, these are squirmy when you try it.

oh a happier note the whole first clutch is in shed, and I'll be moving them to fuzzies when they're done shedding. I think the 2nd clutch isn't far behind, I expect them to shed again in a few days. But they're smaller babies than the other clutch.

Don't worry most of the "big time" breeders at shows act like they know how to pop and end up selling large quantities of 1.1 males LOL

Popping is very inaccurate, especially by those that think they know what they are doing. I've been burned so many times by big time experts.

Wait for your probes and get it done right.

The only problem I ever had popping was a Thayeri I was wanting to buy. I was doing it correctly, it's just the darn thing had tiny tools! They were like goose pimples, lol. It did turn out to be a male, he just isn't popular with the females

Kerby is right here. I am good at popping, really its everting, hemipenes. But all that tells you is its a male. It does not tell you its a female.

And yes, one big time really nice fella, who use to live in tucson and not lives in texas, has sold me three friggin pairs of males in a row. To his credit, he blames his really nice beautiful wife. And of course as such. I cannot go smack her around, shes tooooo cute and she might hit me back too.

So yes, beware of them experts.

A combination of everting and probing is best. Good luck

One thing you know for sure. When a male pops, its definetly a male. However non-popping ones should always be probed to make sure they are female....or rather to make sure they are NOT male.
