Are super meal worms OK food for small monitors?
Hi, yes, superworms are .o.k, but not the best, you will need to dust with a vitamin/mineral (for all insects).
I use (and recommend), a rodent based diet, but I do offer a variety of whole prey animals, too...
What does OK mean? and why would you want just OK? thanks.
Do you mean superworms or super mealworms? Superworms and mealworms are 2 different species of worms, though they look the same. I have seen giant mealworms labeled as super mealworms. Mealworms have a way higher shell to gut ratio, and are not as good as superworms. Like for instance mealworms are not good for beardies and they do not do well if feed a lot of them, but they do fine on superworms. Now if any of this matters in the case of monitors I am not sure.
I have personally feed superworms to my young monitors occasionally with no bad effects. I have not raised enough monitors or feed often enough superworms to really be able to say from my own experience though.
If you're referring to "Giant mealworms", avoid those. They're just mealworms fed steroids, literally. Superworms are fine though. Roaches are great as well.
