This seems to be a common thread lately. What kind of caging did you have him in?
About a 40g plastic tank
First, they usually don't leave the immediate vicinity of the cage right away. Look in all of the possible hiding places that are close to the cage and don't forget to look upwards. They climb very well. I had one that was missing for awhile and I actually found a shed behind a picture on the wall.
Second, check at night and in the evening hours. They are easier to find when they start moving around.
Third, look around the edges of the room. They like to travel along the walls. Consider putting flour down to check for snake tracks in the AM. Lastly, don't give up. I've told this story here before but I had a juvenile Everglades that was missing for 187 days and he is doing great today.
I found my black rat with her head poking out of her cage. I was careless and didn't close the lid completely and she slipped out through the small crack. Luckily I entered the room and flipped on the light before she got all the way out. Close call!
