The wait is killing me!

mrkent Jun 30, 2011 09:42 PM

65 days at 80 - 82 degrees. 12 of the 14 alterna eggs in that clutch still look good, although 2 of the "good" ones developed leaks. Maybe the vermiculite was a little too moist. They seem to have sealed up though and still look ok.

This pic is when they were first laid.

Hope they all pull through for ya Kent. Yeah, they can definitely swell and expand so much that they can leak from too much moisture in the substrate, or drown the embryo too in the process. Hope that doesn't happen for you though.

shouldn't be long now!

Pyro eggs day 65 at 79.5 to 81.5 F. Today is Day 68. One egg is quite dented. They all look healthy.

An interesting discussion on alterna and pyro egg temperature incubation.
Yes, waiting is agonizing!

you are at day 65! im only at day 23!!! how about your 2nd clutch? how are those eggs coming along? the long wait is a killer...Dave.

My second clutch is as 22 days. It is hard not to be concerned about whether they will hatch. I have only done corn snakes, 3 times, with high hatch rate. I read something on the alterna page that indicated that alterna eggs sometimes have problems.

I have included the link.

thank you for this most interesting link. The mention in Merker's article about supplements being needed goes along with my theory that lizard eating snakes require something in their diet that is met better by lizard feeding than by rodent feeding. Like, the snakes will survive on mice but will do better with lizards, especially the neonates.

I keep a colony of fence lizards that have been treated for parasites for those snakes who just wont eat a mouse. I have one little female pyro who will eagerly eat a lizard and digest it just fine but sometimes get an upset stomach on live or ft pinks, which she does not like, anyway. Don't know why, but am willing to accommodate her.

I've always heard that the hardest part is getting the babies to eat...but, we'll cross that bridge later. good luck Kent...Dave.

I imagine it can vary from one group to the next but I have had a lot more trouble with thayeri than Alterna. Most of my babies would always take split brain pinks. One mistake I think many people make, and I was included, is trying to get them to eat too soon. You have to let them get good and hungry, and don't panic too soon and start trying to force therm to eat. Also find some skinks! They are great for those last hold outs. A pinky scented with skink should do it.
