Couple questions about basic care

Odin1 May 26, 2003 08:15 PM

I was just getting into minitors and the whit throats coaught my eye right away. I have not found too many care sheets so if someone could tell me the basic care such as cage size, feeding, temperment, temps etc. All input is appreciated, Thanx.

PS. if you could post a pic of your white throat and possibly a pic of the enclosure, that would be great.

Check Proexotics website for the ionides care sheet, and as far as specifics, temps basking area 130 surface temp-cool ambient 68 to 75 degrees, feed whole animal foods mice, peeps, roaches, crickets, quails, etc. Think of maximum size cage you can offer as in can you offer a 6 foot WT a 5x10x6 foot cage? You will have to build a cage because nobody makes them big enough for a large species of monitor. As a hatchling it is easy to offer a small cage and switch to larger a larger cages as they get bigger but it happens very fast if kept correctly (in a year or 2).

is this your first monitor and if it is do not get a white or black throat they get very BIG! and they cost alot and there food costs alot to.

i have just got some blue spotted timor monitors and they are great for a first monitor. or you can go with the ackies that everyone has been talking about they're supposted to be great first monitors.

This is my first monitor but i know someone who has a white throat and his is soooo cool and layed back. I have handled him many times and i also love the way he looks. I understand they are expensive but i have little problem getting money from my parents because they support my reptile addiction and I am only 13 years old.

Do not get a White throat monitor because if your 13 this monitor(when full grown) could tare off your arms and beat you with it. you can have more control and fun with something like a smaller monitor. then when you have more expeirence with monitors you can buy somthing big!

If you're 13 you also need to consider who is going to take care of this lizard if you go off to college in a few years.

I understand what you are saying and I guess I could always just interact with my uncles and I guess I was just a bit over zealous because they are just soo cool. But I was donig some research and was wondering if a savannah monitor would be a good choice? Thanx for all of your guys' input.

PS. I already have a uromastyx and although it is much smaller than a white throat I believe i could just take it with me to college.
