I took this video last week while herping in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Northern California, I thought some of you might enjoy it.

I hope you're all having a great season.

Congrats on a beautiful find, Brian! I remember the feeling of finding my first Arizona and California mtn kings. Awesome!

FGS Jul 03, 2011 10:03 AM

Hey Shane,

June was a good herping month for me.

I found my fist Zonata and my first Rubber Boa in back to back weekends.

See you at the shows.

How much frequent are these in the area ?

It is rare or just cause you never go around there ?

Would love to catch some snakes too, here they are really not that frequent with the cold. Some gartners and water snake is better than nothing

love this world, don't hate it.

From what I understand the mountain kings are not that uncommon, but are very secretive. They live in crevases of rocks. I've spent hundreds of hours herping in the San Francisco Bay Area, but have never caught one until last week. I think it's a matter of being at the right place at the right time.

Now that I'm getting to know the area where I caught this guy, I hope to catch many more.

Alan,

I'm still floating from the experience.

WOW a sharp tailed snake, based on our conversation earlier today it sounds like you're still floating too.

Looking forward to our trade bud.

Come over to my backyard if you want some sharp-tailed snakes! They like it much cooler than it is right now, but we found a dead one on 4th of July a couple driveways over. I usually find them when it's chilly outside and damp. I'm about 40 miles north of Brian.

I might take you up on that! They are very rare in my area. Send me a pic on your next find. It's been years since I have seen one. Love the belly on those little guys! I'll stop by on my way to visit Brian

I'll catch any I find and send you pics, but they might not show up again until October or so depending on the temps.

Hi Brian,
That's a real nice looking zonata at that. Awesome catch! You can hear your excitement in your voice. Are you planning on keeping them as you find them or release them?
Charlton

Charlton,

As tough as it was I released him.
