Big Ugly Egg

mikebell Jul 02, 2011 11:49 AM

This clutch is ready to hatch in the next several days. I was removing the clutch from the egg box to put it in a shoebox for hatching. I put many clutches in one egg box and then put each clutch in it's own box to hatch. If no eggs are pipping in the egg box, I keep using it over and over. This egg is 140 gr. The others in the clutch are 110-120 gr. As you can see, from the same egg box, some eggs wrinkle and some don't.

Quite ugly.

I don't understand why you put them all in the same box.
I think it can get complicated, mostly if they are laid nearly the same time and hatch about the same time.

Also if you move them, it's just like more "problematic".

No one ever said : Don't put all your eggs in the same bucket !

:D

good luck with what works for you !

It would take a lot of individual boxes. I'm expecting 130 clutches. I like to open each box and look about once a week, there are a lot less boxes to open. I don't want them to hatch on the egg crate anyway, I'm afraid they could get their head stuck in the holes. So they need to be removed from the egg crate boxes before hatching anyway. If the egg crate and medium don't get egg goo on them, I just put a new clutch in the box in place of the one I removed. At around 50 days I put them in a shoe box with wet newspaper and air holes. If it is a big clutch I'll use two shoeboxes. They stay together until first shed, then they get their own box.

Basket.
I think it's a great idea, unless your temps are off, then everythting is dead or twisted up instead of just one clutch. Other than that, if you're on the ball and can tell when they're ready to hatch, you move them out as explained.
Neat idea.
Egg looks good to me. Keep us updated.
