Here's what else is hatching and will...

ShadyLady Jul 04, 2011 09:14 PM

I rolled over a large log in my horse pen in prep for cutting it up. Wanted to be sure nothing was inside it. Found two clutches of 5 lined skink eggs. Well, I had to hatch them didn't I? The first clutch has hatched and now the second is hatching. I've been releasing them all over the place, LOL! I think there were 17 eggs total.

Next is the gulf coast box turtle laying eggs in my driveway, right where I park. Lucky I saw her as I drove up. Well, I had to bring those inside, too, didn't I? There are four beautiful eggs.

The skink and boxie forums are pretty dead and thought ya'll might enjoy.

I love those skinks. Beautiful electric blue tails! Those eggs look pretty good sized. Congrats on your success. That will be cool seeing the baby box turtles. They are so rarely seen as hatchlings in the wild.

Thanks. I released the rest of the little skinks this morning. The eggs swell as incubation progresses.

Yeah, can't wait for the little turtles. I usually find one or two here each spring. I may be tempted to keep one of them.

Nice. "Back in the day" I bred southeastern five-lined skinks. Still haven't been able to produce Gulf Coasts though.

My son wanted to keep some of the little skinks - no way! They are better off in my yard eating roaches!

Boxies are all over the place here in N. Fla. I've seen one around with no pattern and a white head. Doesn't that mean its really old?

I may keep one of these babies. They are very personable turtles.

Babies can sometimes be a pain to get feeding. If you have any trouble, try strawberries, worms and crickets with their legs pulled off. Good luck! Oh and skinks are the best for scenting pinks if you get any stubborn snakes!

Thanks for the info bout feeding the baby turtles. Too late on the skinks, they're all released. Besides, they were just too cute.

Yeah those skinks were cute. I have often wanted to try to keep a colony of them. I did try keeping the smaller brown grouns skinks, but they are just too small. They remind me of little Otters.

That's funny...I've got 17 skink eggs incubating now.
found while moving stack of old rotting wood. there were 21 to begin with but 4 didn't make it....I was really surprised any made it. I knocked them all over the place before I saw them. Didn't even have the slightest idea which side was "up"..also no idea when they were laid or when they should hatch but it looks like dark little guys in the eggs when I candle them.
good luck with all your eggs...and to keep in on-topic....

Yeah, I was afraid I'd knocked some around, too, but they all hatched. I found them June 3rd and was pretty sure one clutch was brand new. That clutch finished hatching last night. At about 80 degrees.

In fact, one egg started oozing liquid early on and I thought it was going bad, but a healthy baby hatched out of it.

You are welcome. Yeah, I know what you mean. But I like seeing them around my place. I saw a baby skink yesterday and wondered if it was one of 'mine'. LOL!
