Golden corns, the whole story, with pics

BlueKing Jul 06, 2011 11:35 AM

Here are some pics of the only Golden corns I have. First pic is the male, second pic is the female. The corns in the first two pics are the only surviving golden corns to date (not counting hets or the founder animal). I do have nine hets along with those - three females and six males. The founder animal in the last two pics is at LEAST 11-12 years old, probably a lot older, since she was found in the wild as an adult in 2004. She has not grown any bigger since then, even though she's always eaten like a pig, perhaps adding only about an inch to her total length. Over the last couple of years, her colors have started to fade and become darker and she is not doing too well this year - not even producing ANY eggs at all.... She's recently gotten sick and has problems keeping her meals down the last couple of months. I have taken her to a vet and they have ran several tests on her so far: No bacterial infections found - still waiting for the results of a cryptosporidia screening I requested, which had to be done at a university lab....(keeping fingers crossed). The vet, who does have some experience with reptiles said that she looks like a very old snake, but still seems healthy and well fed for her age......
Okay, the pic in the middle was the brightest golden corn produced (in 07') It mysteriously died after about a month and a half. It was so much brighter than the two 06's, I'm sure that if it had survived, it would have most likely looked like its' mother, maybe even brighter....
Back to the the first two pics: What I find interesting is, the variability between just those two. They are both 06' animals and have bred this year (to each other), producing six eggs: five slugs and ONE good egg. As of recently I only have three good eggs out of the het breedings - next year should be much better as I only had ONE female that was decent size - the other two were barely breeding age (around 2.5 foot), and produced mostly slugs....Yes, my females have been slow growers, but they are eating better this year than ever before. It has been a long journey as some of you already know, but trust me I'm not giving up!!! The way things have gone so far, I'll be happy if just ONE egg makes it!!!! I did purchase a couple of nice incubators that heat & cool, and they work very well, as I have added an ADDITIONAL thermometer to ensure the incubator's thermometer is not lying! On top of that, I have invested in a small generator to ensure I will ALWAYS have power for those incubators!

Awesome stuff Zee!. Thanks for laying out the entire history on those guys too.

I'm sure things will turn around and you will eventually have better success with the production in the near future.

I certainly remember that original golden corn being very well colored many years ago when I saw it personally at Daytona. Many times photos just don't capture the colors that well too as you know.

Best of luck bro!

Thanks Doug.
.....That's right...You DID see the Golden corn in person at Daytona. I think that was in 08'... It was good that we met briefly. I met a LOT of folks that weekend and it's hard to remember everyone since I've been out of the picture for the last three years. When i get back for good I'm going to have to go to a few more reptile shows to get re-aquointed with everyone!

Yeah Zee, that would be great to bump into you again at Daytona sometime in the near future. That's always one of the main reasons I go.

they look great Z, have you tried breeding any of the males to a caramal to try and rule that out?

hope the few eggs you got out of the project this year do well for you would love to see this one reach fruition.

BlueKing Jul 07, 2011 09:43 AM

Thanks.
I will be trying the caramel thing next year and see what happens.....
I like THAT corn. Is that the one that was found near Miami? How long is it now (male or female)?

Thanks, Zee, for the information and pics. I just can't believe how difficult it has been for you to get offspring, Sheesh! You know everyone is pulling for you.

Thanks.
I'm surprised I haven't been accused of feeding offspring to my Kingsnakes, lol! I would never do that anyway (and all my current kings are captive born rodent eaters)... I do have lots of pics of Golden corn slugs - Unfortunately!

Hang in there Zee! At least you have some hets to work with and things will turn around. Have you proven it to be a recessive gene? You probably already mentioned it, but I missed it?

Thanks.
So far all signs are pointing to a recessive gene.....
One thing is, that my hets are doing MUCH better, especially the few females I got!
Next year I expect more eggs and less slugs as well, since my small females will be over three feet long...

I am glad to hear you are doing OK and that you are having some success with your Goldens this year.

We are all pulling for you and hopefully next year will be a really great one.

I am eager to see if you will ever make a golden albino to isolate the golden pigment and see what it looks like without the darker pigment covering it. As this would be a double ressesive I know that could take a wile.

Best of luck at home and over there.

Thanks for the kind words.
I wish I had better luck with these corns, but I'm not complaining....At least I have enough to work with and I'm sure things WILL get better!
If the economy would just improve a little, I would be home a lot sooner and be able to devote more time to this project, but I will have to say that my wife & son have done an outstanding job so far all things considered! Otherwise I would have sold them all years ago.......

Hahahahaha....
That was a little harsh - wasn't it.....Selling them ALL.....HAHAHAHAHA!
That was funny - after re-reading that, thanks to you I noticed my OOPS!!!
If someone gives me the right amount of money, though - I'll sell the wife!!! HAHAHAHAHA!
I DO tell her that too - Of course she knows that we'll both spit the money and she'll come back to me a short time later.....(Remember: Indecent proposal???)
I've been with her for 27 years now...so I really don't think we'll EVER be apart. We have a very strong relationship and 100% trust. She's also very good person to be able to put up with ME and my Cornsnakes, Kingsnakes and Indigos!
But what I did mean was sell all the Golden corns....... - not the family!
But thanks for the laughs - you got me with that one!
