how to identify vanillas?

adamjeffery Jul 07, 2011 06:41 PM

so i ended up with a bunch of new snakes today and 1 is a het albino female that has a vanilla look to her and also is sporting the head spot. my question is that i can assume all i want but is there any other vanilla traits that could help id vanilla's?
also i cannot get anymore info on this snake as it was involved with a seizure of 25 snakes and many other animals. horses, ferrets snakes and others. all i have is the info that was on each tub. thanks in advance

Hey Adam,
I have found that some vanillas can be difficult to ID as hatchlings, but after multiple sheds it becomes much easier to pick them out. Like other morphs there are low expression animals and those that are textbook specimens. Some of the things I look for are the head pattern (that you mention), somewhat aberrant lateral markings, faded dorsal spots, and a brighter dorsal stripe on the tail. Shoot me an email if I can help in any way.
Best of luck.

Sorry - I don't want to cause any confusion and thought I'd clarify what I said about the head pattern. I was referring to the faded head that is synonymous with vanillas- nothing more.

I've had vanillas from every spectrum that you could imagine. I've had some from vanilla x normal that I'm sure I have sold as normal as I'd rather be safe than sorry. With that said, most vanillas are easy to pick out after they have shed a couple times as vanillas do lighten up alot as they get size to them. If you are scared to buy into this project, don't. There are enough people that have super vanillas breeding now that you can be 100% positive of what you are buying and after you hatch a clutch or 2 of vanillas, you will be picking them out easily. This year I have not produced an average vanilla, they have all been screamers but I have been selective of what I have bred my super vanilla to. This project is going to show alot of what it can do this year with what a few breeders have already produced and the more that is going to be produced as the hatching season goes on. pictured is a nice vanilla pastel female I produced last year.

I have no problem buying them...I have a nice pair...at 2 1/2 years old..well maybe 3 by now....they have grown well and bred and laid...my one incubator suxx and I think I lost all the eggs is all....I wanted super vanillas...so I could breed them to other stuff next year....guess the male will see the vanilla female and maybe the fire female as well...?....that has got to be a pain when both light genes are in there.....?...

....good luck....have fun....

i was unaware that het amels are lighter than normal and was unaware that the head spot was also a trait for het amel. i guess that answers my question.
im actually getting into some vanillas when i trade my friend (ballin) i take his word on them. this het amel just looks super light and had the head spot also. my mind just went straight to vanilla....
